Prayer To Know God More Intimately

How To Draw Near To God

Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world Gods invisible qualitieshis eternal power and divine naturehave been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

Lord, I praise you because you are great and mighty and your eternal power is unmatched. Creation reflects your glory and reveals to us your divine nature.

Draw me into more intimacy with you so that I will continually dwell in your presence. Help me to take my time in your word because I want to know your will and ways.

Grant me the grace to allow you into all areas of my heart so that you can minister to me in a special way. I know that when I open my heart to you, I can contain more of you.

Transform my heart as I spend more time with you and help me to be more Christlike.

Help me see Your glory in everything around me and appreciate your beauty in creation. I will partake of your divine nature with every breath I take and stand in awe of your greatness.

May I delight in spending time with you each day and enjoy hearing your voice.

In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.

Read His Word To Draw Near To God

At times the Bible can be difficult to understand, but I hope you wont let that deter you from reading it every day. I found that it becomes so much easier to understand when I ask the Holy Spirit to guide and teach me as I read. The key is simply to begin. Find a place to startthe Gospel of John, the Psalms, or even Genesisand begin reading. Before your eyes touch the first word, ask God for wisdom and understanding. He will meet you where you are and soon youll be drawing near to Him.

Join A Small Group Or Bible Study

I promised we would return to this topic, and here we are. Once you find a church that you love, do not hesitate to get connected and join a small group or bible study.

Especially if you struggle with reading the Bible, I highly recommend you find a bible study to help you make sense of Gods Word.

Not only do small groups help you feel like you are a part of your church community, it also allows you a safe space to discuss topics you are struggling with.

This can be questions from the Bible, questions about your walk with God, and even just questions about your life. It is ridiculously helpful to be able to just discuss things with other believers because you already have a similar interest and foundation in your love for Jesus Christ.

Small groups also help you to process and understand things better, and gain perspective in a fresh and real way.

Draw Near Through Repentance

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?

Repentance is one of those terms in the Bible that can sound overly-churchy and complex. After all, its not something most people use in everyday language, especially around those who dont claim the Christian faith.

But Ive come to love what Im learning the true definition of repentance to be. You see, if I boil it down to only mean ask for forgiveness, it can quickly turn from life-giving to shaming.

Ive walked with the burden of believing repentance was the all on me part of my relationship with Christ. When I lean on my own power to turn from a lifestyle of sin, all Im left with is shame from not being able to drop the sin Im trying to lay down at the Lords feet.

This pride doesnt compel me to ask for forgiveness. I may be aware of my sin, but pride traps me in the shame sin brings, or worse, deceives me into thinking what is wrong is actually right.

You see, asking for forgiveness takes great humility.

Unfortunately, pride is what resides in my fleshly heart. The only drops of humility I possess are straight from the Holy Spirit Himself.

So true biblical repentance is asking for forgivenessafter the grace of God has melted your prideful heart.

Repentance is an apology initiated by Gods love that convicts your born-again soul to submit to His power in you.

Prayer Is A Great Tool For Drawing Closer To God

So from here, how do you continue to draw near to God? Work on your prayer life. Prayer is simply a conversation with God. Let me tell you that my prayer life has gotten a lot stronger since my illness. One of the things Ive gotten a lot better at is gratitude.

I could be so much worse off than I am now. Yes, I know, no hands and no feet is pretty bad. However, I have prosthetic legs which are pretty much like having regular feet, only I take them off at night and put them on in the morning.

I use my stylus strapped to my arm for typing and practically everything pertaining to blogging and communicating. Mike sets out my lunch and snacks for the day. Other than that, Im pretty self-sufficient. That right there is a LOT to be grateful for.

So I spend a lot of time thanking God for all of my blessings and praising him. For gratitude inspiration, visit Gratitude from A to Z and Why counting your blessings is so important!

Ive also gotten better at praying for others. Maybe I just have more to pray about. Its important to lean on the Lord more. I have a tendency to try and work things out myself. However, I know that dependency on the Lord is part of drawing near to Him. Leaning on Him to take care of things instead of me. After all, hes way better at it than I am.

Just as teenagers can live in the same house as their parents, yet choose not to live close to them in partnership, so we can choose to be children of God, yet live very distant from God in our hearts. The Bible tells us, Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.

This promise is both heartening and encouraging. It also reminds us of the responsibility we have in our relationship to God.

The phrase, draw near, means, very simply, to approach or get close to a thing. To draw near to God, means then, to get close to God. If you get close to God, James is saying, God Himself will come to be close to you.

That seems a bit redundant at first. If you get closer to someone or something, of course they are going to naturally be closer to you as well, but James is describing a spiritual relationship, not a physical proximity.

We might think of the Parable of the Prodigal Son and of the sons resolve in that parable to reunite with his father. Leaving the far distant country he had sought to make a home in, he returns to the house of his father. As he gets closer to the house, his father sees him from a long way off, and rather than waiting for the son to close the full distance, the father runs from his place to greet the son and embrace him . The son sought to draw near to his father, and the father in turn drew near to Him.

This is Gods desire.

He wants us to come to Him. But as we begin that journey, we should not be imagining God waiting at the end of the road, toe tapping impatiently to see us get where we need to be. Rather, God is, metaphorically speaking, rushing to meet those who are sincerely drawing near to Him.

How Do We Draw Near To God

by Dr. Richard Fisher | Nov 10, 2015 | Honesty |

James 4:8-10 is often called the New Testament 2 Chronicles 7:14 promise for the church, because it echoes the Old Testament promise that God revives believers who come to Him in humility, prayer, and repentance.

James precedes this promise by describing something we all know too wellthe predictable outcomes of life dominated by sinful desires and governed by the worlds system: pride and arrogance leading to conflict, frustration, quarrels, fights, and destructiveness . But he follows up this reality-based analysis by offering two antidotes that lead to revival: There is hope in the form of a wake-up call and an invitation .

Gods Wake-Up Call

James says that these believers had settled for what they thought was a happy medium between sold-out commitment to God and a worldly lifestyle. In reality, they had become adulterous, arrogant enemies of God.

Talk about a wake-up call! James makes the choice clear: Believers who have traded their closeness to God for camaraderie with the world must lay aside their sin and humbly plead for grace. The Spirit of God jealously desires our deepest affections. Our wicked ways must be completely abandoned in order for Him to bless with revival.

Get Fed And Stay Hungry

How To Draw Close To God

In addition to a weekly sermon at church, you need to be constantly fed the Word. Try not to rely on others to feed you, this is something that you need to seek for yourself. You can do this by joining a small group, participating in a Bible study, watching sermons online, visiting cool Christian websites like Draw For God.com, listening to Christian podcasts, and even reading daily devotionals. This also goes back to what I mentioned in #3 which is regarding reading your Bible every day. So dont settle for just a small portion once a week. Seek to know the Lord on a much deeper level and this will bring you much closer to Him

Draw Near Through An Eternal Focus

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Following Christ is no easy feat. Trouble will come, persecution will persist, our faith will be tested. Its not a matter of if, but when . We cant deny this dark truth, but fortunately, it makes the good news of the gospel shine even brighter.

When I became a Christian I finally received an answer to one of the biggest questions I had growing up. The meaning of life became abundantly clear when I decided to follow Jesus. And the glory of God made it even richer than anything I couldve hoped for.

As Christians, not only do we understand the meaning of life, we have the key to living it with eternal purpose. We have the Holy Spirit living inside of us, equipping us to live out Gods mission of making disciples of every nation.

Every single thing we Christians do, we do it for the Lord. This means even the ordinary every day of washing dishes and folding laundry hold eternal purpose. What we do matters because of how we do it and for Whom we ultimately do it.

What youre doing matters, even if youre not explicitly preaching the gospel to an unreached people group in the 10/40 window. Seeking God wholeheartedly and loving your neighbor as yourself, regardless of geography or capacity, is important because God created the definition of our purpose to include it all.

Salvation Draws You Close To God

The first step to drawing closer to God is to accept his son, Jesus as your Savior. Admit you are a sinner and accept the precious blood that He shed on the cross of Calvary, as payment for your sin debt. My post on How to Grow your Faith in God has more details on the steps you need for salvation.

Romans 10:9-10 says That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Once youve made that prayer, you began a relationship with the Lord. Next, you need to make a decision that you want God to see you through and know that you arent able to deal exclusively on your own. I was saved in my 20s and have been building on my relationship with God.

This illness was a great test of my faith and belief that He would give me the courage and faith that I needed to see this whole thing through. Answered prayers are an encouragement which also draw you close to God.
