Experimental Techniques To Draw Water

Creating surface texture onto which you can draw reflections on the water is an effective way to create more preliminary drawings.

One technique that works well with tonal graphite drawing is to layer tissue paper.

  • First, collect some good quality white card or cartridge paper.
  • Collect some thin tissue paper and tear it into horizontal strips and irregular shapes and sizes.
  • Once you have finished preparing your paper. Begin to paste it to the surface of your card.
  • To speed up the process of drying, you can use a drying tool to dry the surface of your college.
  • The process of creating a textural surface onto which you can apply tone can be taken a stage further by working onto the surface with a piece of sandpaper.
  • Use the sandpaper to create areas of texture.
  • Repeat the process once or twice until you are satisfied with the result.
  • You can now begin the process of applying tone and shading with a graphite stick.
  • The same process of drawing marks of various sizes can be applied to the surface of the sheet.
  • Use a soft grade pencil applied at an angle or a graphite stick. Again, with larger marks in the foreground and smaller marks drawn in the mid and background areas.

Understanding What You’re Looking At

The first thing to get decide is which direction the light is coming from in your painting as this will determine where the highlights and shadows in the drops will be.

Then apply the following ‘rules’:

  • There’ll be a shadow underneath and to the opposite side of the light direction . Or just underneath if the light source is directly above.
  • There’ll be a highlight on the top not in the center but towards the side the light is coming from . This is the light source reflected in the water drop.
  • There is a shadow at the top of the water drop .
  • There is a highlight at the bottom of the water drop .

Sketch The Water Drops

Lightly sketch the outline of the water drops using a Tombow Mono HB Pencil on a 5 x 7 piece of Strathmore Series Bristol Board Smooth.

Drawing Tips Sketch the droplets lightly so you can easily erase the guidelines later.

Keep in mind that you will be adjusting the drawing as you go along, this is just a rough sketch at this point.

Begin by adding graphite with an HB pencil to the darkest areas of the droplets.

The darkest areas will be where the shadow is.

Refer to the reference image to identify the shadows.

Drawing Tips: Use a sharp pencil and do not make the shadow to dark at this point. You will be adjusting the values as you go along.

The next step is to draw in the dark areas of the water droplet.

Drawing Tip: Draw in a circular motion with a light touch.

Continue to refer back to your reference image.

Lightly blend the graphite with a blending stump.

Drawing Tip: Do not press too hard with the blending stump. Doing so will damage the tooth of the paper, making it imposable to add more graphite to the drawing surface.

Lightly tap off some graphite with a kneaded eraser. Removing some of the graphite will create soft value changes and create highlights to the water droplet.

Clean up the lines with a Tombow Mono Zero Refillable Eraser.

Drawing Tip: You will want to follow the steps above several times until you are completely satisfied with the values and highlights.

The Shadow Under The Water Drop

If there is a light, there should be a shadow. The shadow appears opposite the light source under the droplet a small and darker arc under the droplet.

The green shows the shadow of a water drop on the leaf.

This is the simplest way and the simplest environment where the drops of water can be painted:

  • one source of light,

If the water drops are in the multicolored environment, likely, they will also be multicolored.

Sometimes the drop can reflect the environment like a mirror. I doubt that you will have to draw such a picture because it requires a special idea and quite a high concentration of attention exactly on the drop in the composition.

Let`s watch a short painting lesson video to understand more clearly what I have already explained.

The Water Drops Color

When painting the drops of water, everything is simple enough. The water is transparent and this means that it assumes the color of the external environment.

In our case when we learn to paint the water drops on the leaves, the drops will be slightly darker than the leaf itself. This depends on the environment where the flower is. If there is a dark environment, we should paint the darker base for our future droplet. And if there is a lighter environment, we will make this base light.Under such conditions, you will not need any additional paints for drawing the droplets. In fact, the color of droplets is the color of leaves. As, for example, you can see in the following photo:

Observe The Surface Of Water

A problem that most people have when drawing water is that it continually moves and changes. To overcome the difficulties in interpreting the surface of the water, the waves, and reflections. My advice is to simplify the process into a series of large and small marks.

The marks that you will draw will represent the waves and the shadows created by the waves.Draw large marks in the foreground, there will be darker. An important rule is that marks drawn in the foreground should be more intense than those illustrated in the background.Drawing smaller marks in the midground and progress onto adding smaller dots.

A Speck On The Water Drop

How to Draw a Realistic Water Drop (BASIC and Simple)

There is at least one source of light in any environment. When we know where the light comes from, we can paint the beams falling on our droplets. A bright speck will appear in the place where the beam is falling on the drop. The speck should be small but very bright and clear most often it is the white dot on the surface of the droplet.

This is a basic outline of a water drop and it gives you an idea of the parts of a drop in terms of light and shadow in the picture, light is coming into the drop in the direction of the arrow, which creates a bright white dot where the light hits. Around this dot is a dark area .

On the opposite side of the drop is a reflection arc, and then there is a flow of light leaving the drop onto the surface below. Although not shown, there is a shadow around the edge of the water drop on the opposite side to where the light enters the water.

The Glare On The Drop

So, the beam falls on the drop, strikes through it, and diffuses. Thus, an overtone appears opposite the speck. This is not a bright and clear light spot.

The yellowshows how the beam falls leaves a speck, and how the light diffuses inside the droplet. The blue shows the overtone, the reflection of a speck inside the drop.
