The Adventures Of Sharkboy And Lavagirl In 3
Robert Rodriguez is at his enfant terrible game again, for the second time this year. After he quit the Directors Guild of America in order to have Frank Miller credited as co-director of Sin City, he now offers The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D, for which his seven-year-old son, Racer Max Rodriguez, is given writing credits for story and screenplay. As the films production notes detail, Racer Max had been drawing up, dreaming about and spinning tales of Sharkboy and Lavagirl for quite some time before Rodriguez decided to transform them into a motion picture.
Theres nothing necessarily wrong with turning the imaginative fantasies of a child into a film; in fact it suggests in inherent respect for childrens intelligence , and might ensure Sharkboy and Lavagirls success with its intended audience. But theres nothing necessarily worthwhile about this undertaking either. The major problem with Sharkboy is that its story is so incessantly derivative. I dont want to harsh on little Racer Max too much, or squash his burgeoning writing career. But Sharkboy and Lavagirl is cobbled together from a childs favorite bits and pieces from his favorite stories, films and pastimes.
The Kissing Pole Prank
Dooley’s first on-camera kiss came when she had to peck Lautner on the cheek toward the end of the movie. Dooley was politely teased about it throughout the shoot, and on shoot day, Rodriguez decided to give Dooley a false sigh of relief to ease the tension.;
Dooley:;I was so nervous to kiss him on the cheek because, being 12, that’s a huge deal.
Rodriguez: I do remember Taylor being nervous for her first kiss. So we said “Okay, here’s a green pole. Since we cant put you actually side by side because of the 3D effect, you actually have to kiss a pole very nicely.”
But that wasn’t the only prank on set.
Boyd:;I remember hearing about . It’s crazy. Both of my parents and the majority of my family went to Texas A&M University, which is in Texas. Robert being a Texas fan, especially at that time when they’re in the same conference, he would show me a script with a drawn Longhorn sign or something. I remember the grips and the whole catering crew having a prank battle themselves.
Rodriguez: We were shooting this at the same time as Sin City.;I was making two movies at once. The kids would come in the day, and then the older actors would come in later. It was one that’s very dark and then very light. You need that balance. It’s like a family movie for families at all. It was really a fun shoot
Rodriguez added a special nugget for the EW readers: He has an upcoming Netflix film called We Can Be Heroes in which Dooley returns as Lavagirl and has a daughter that’s half-shark.;

The Adventures Of Sharkboy And Lavagirl
SharkBoy and LavaGirl appear through a pair of tornadoes in front of Max‘s school and request that he come with them to Planet Drool. They fly to the planet using a shark-shaped spacecraft, and Max learns that everything he dreamed about is real. Lavagirl explains that darkness is taking over Planet Drool. When they reach the planet, she explains that they came to Earth so Max could save Planet Drool. His dreams are going bad in the Dream Lair, which is across the planet. They have to cross several terrains to reach the Dream Lair, including the Sea of Confusion, which has now frozen over. Sharkboy is upset over the frozen ocean but Lavagirl stops his outburst with her hot touch. She then asks Max if she’s Evil which he doesn’t believe she is.
They have to outrun the darkness where they discover a full roller coaster that does ever stop. SharkBoy and LavaGirl work together to stop the roller coaster and save the passengers. They end up on the ride themselves, and at the peak of the ride, Lavagirl points out her home which is only at half power. They are taken to Mr. Electric‘s lair and learn that Mr. Electric is taking orders from someone. Max, Sharkboy, and Lavagirl fight plugs when they are captured by Mr. Electric and sent to the Dream Graveyard.
