Shoes are a very ordinary item. In most parts of the world, people wear them everyday to protect their feet from injury or cold.

Shoes, however, have become much more than foot protection. Today, many people select their shoes as a decorative item, a symbol of self-expression.

Tennis shoes, also called sneakers, are among the most popular. Designed as athletic shoes, they are now worn casually as well.

The name “sneakers” was recorded as early as 1887, because the rubber sole was very quiet compared to the leather soles often used at that time.

Sneakers have also become emblematic of popular culture. Music artists are often contracted to promote popular brands.

“Sneakerheads” are collectors of shoes. “Artistically modified” collectible shoes may sell for upwards of 1,000 dollars at retail stores, while those worn by celebrities in competitions or movies may be sold at auction for thousands or even millions of dollars.

The Air Jordan 12 sneakers worn by basketball star Michael Jordan during a 1997 finals game sold for 104,000 dollars at auction.

Different Styles Of Shoe You Can Draw

One of the other main advantages that youll have when choosing to draw shoes is the endless variety of shoes that you can choose from. Sneakers, sandals, pumps, dress shoes, boots, cowboy boots, or any other type of shoe make an excellent subject for your next drawing or painting.

When you first start drawing shoes, yous should experiment and draw as many different types of shoes as possible. This is great practice, and it will also let you find out what types of shoes you enjoy drawing the most. Do you enjoy the simple form and smooth texture of a dress shoe? Great! What about something more complex, maybe with a worn, cracked surface, like an old cowboy boot? If thats what interests you, then go for it!

One interesting approach you could take when setting up your compositions is to use many different types of shoes. You could put down some new dress shoes that are smooth and have some old soccer cleats and cowboy boots.

This will give you different textures, colors, and surfaces to draw. Its also great practice since it will force you to learn how to depict different textures using different mediums.

Speaking of mediums, make sure that you try out many different options, and dont be afraid to mix and match. Mixed media art is prevalent and with good reason. What is mixed media art?

Design Your Own Custom Shoes With Ohuhu Alcohol Markers

How to draw a basketball shoe with pens and pencils

Did you know that you could customize your shoes with your Ohuhu markers? Well, you can! And youll see, its extremely fun and amazing. All you need is a bit of imagination, your markers, and some white canvas shoes.

The first step to customize your shoes is finding inspiration. What do you want to draw? I would definitely recommend you to sketch a few ideas on a sketchbook/sheet of paper and start building your color palette. This will help you have an idea of what your final result will look like.

Once you have your Idea, its finally time to start working on the shoes. Start by taking off the laces and recovering the areas you dont want to draw on. Then, you can begin sketching. It may seem scary at first, but just imagine drawing on a regular piece of paper. Tips: Dont press too hard on your pencil so you can erase it easily after.

When the sketches are finished, you can start the inking process. Inking requires some focus so make sure to take your time. You can use different five liner sizes to have a better result in the end. This part is not necessary, if you think your drawing will look better without being inked you can directly move to my favorite part, the coloring with Ohuhus Markers.

Draw In The Outline Of Your Shoe

For this second step of your shoe drawing, we will be adding in an outline for your shoe.

This part could be a little tricky at first, so I would recommend drawing with a pencil first and then going over it in pen later.

We will take this step slowly as there are a lot of different elements to it. Starting from the back of the base of the shoe, draw in a vertical, curved line.

You can then draw in a horizontal line that dips sharply in the middle to form the opening of the shoe.

From there, you can draw in a curved line coming up from the front of the shoes base. Once you have that in, I would use a pencil to draw a line between the end of that line and the end of the opening of the shoe.

Using that pencil line as a guide, you can draw in the sloping front of the shoe, making a few indents for the laces.

For this step, you should really take your time and refer to the reference picture closely. I know you can do it!

Drawing Anime Feet From Top View

This is a good view to start with as it lets you see a lot of the foot.

As mentioned above start by drawing the overall outline of the foot first. The foot will be wider towards the toes and narrower towards the heel. However the overall shape of the combined toes will narrow slightly going from the base to to tip.

Pay attention to the proportions to make sure the toes are properly sized in relation to one another. The big toe will obviously be the largest .

Now We Shall Add In Some Laces

Using the bumpy indents you made in the slope of the shoe previously, you can now draw in the laces.

These may look complicated, but if you look closely at the picture, you will see that theyre made up of some pretty simple shapes.

You can draw in the laces themselves using some curved lines, and then use some circular shapes for the metal rims.

Once those are in, you can finish off the lace section of your shoe drawing with some straighter lines around them.

How To Draw High Heel Shoes

This tutorial shows you five steps to draw a heeled shoe, guided by fashion illustration artist Josefina Fernandez. For her drawing, Fernandez used a reference photo found online. Shoes can look very daunting to sketch, but if youre faithful to what you see, you can achieve pretty realistic effects, Fernandez advises.

1. Draw a triangle.

All high-heeled shoes form the basic shape of a triangle. Sketch one out that your shoe can fit inside. Then make marks along the edges to note where landmarks of the shoe will fall. For accurate proportions work with thirds when marking out your triangle.

2. Sketch the outline of the shoe.

Using your triangle as a guide, start to draw the basic outline of the shoe. Dont worry if your lines are messy just focus on following the smooth, curved lines of the shoe without picking up your pen.

3. Add details and draw your final lines.

Add lines for the insole and outsole, the shape of the heel and peg. Beyond your basic outline, these lines add definition and dimension to your shoe. Once youve finished the linework, go over your final lines and use an eraser to clean up the drawing. If youre working digitally, you can simply make a new layer for this.

4. Fill your shoe with color.

5. Add highlights to the upper.

Tips To Top Off Your Skills

If starting from scratch sounds like an overwhelming endeavor, tracing is a great way to get realistic results fast. You dont have to start out sketching, says Fernandez. You can use your reference photo and just trace over it if you want to practice, or want to get a feel for the shape of the shoe.

Also be sure to consider the material of the shoe when it comes to highlights and shading. Plastic and patent leather arent going to behave the same way as suede or canvas. Some shoes are shiny and smooth, while others are matte and textured. Have fun and experiment with different brushes to find the right texture for every shoe.

Lastly, use these steps as a handy guide for all your shoe drawings, but keep in mind that your tools and techniques will vary depending on what style you choose. From meticulous and realistic digital drawings to futuristic fashion sketches, or even anime and manga, the choice is yours. On the right part of this example, you can see how a high-heeled shoe leaves an imprint in the ground.

There is just a small point for the heel and then a flat area for the toes.

How Do You Draw A Shoe From The Side

Drawing a shoe from the side is another simple angle to work from, but its one that youll have to master if you want to be able to draw shoes from many different angles. Drawing a shoe from the side is a lot like drawing a persons profile.

You have the basic outline of the shoe, and it wont have a lot of three dimensional quality to the drawing because nothing is going to really stick out or recede in the picture. Its mostly a flat image, and even if you can set up new lighting, you probably wont be able to come up with dramatic lighting that really brings the picture to life.

Why would you want to draw a shoe from what is usually an uninteresting angle? Its a part of learning to understand the shape of a shoe and how it looks from every angle. Dont worry, you can move onto more challenging and exciting angles later on, but for now, try to be patient and spend some time mastering the basics first. In other words, you need to learn to walk before you can run.
