A good cartoonist is one who can extract the main details of an object or a human being and represent them with simple shapes. The goal is that a child can recognize the drawing and be attracted to what they’re looking at.

Children are the main audience for cartoons. Masters like Walt Disney, Hanna & Barbera, Chuck Jones, Jim Henson, Walter Lantz and many others have enchanted the world with their magical and eternal characters.

My role here is to help you understand the proper way to assemble this puzzle. I’ll teach you how to draw characters from the techniques presented. I guarantee you’ll be shocked at how easy it is to create a cartoon expression that children will adore!

Imitating Your Favorite Cartoon

1Find a picture of the character online. It’s easiest to copy a cartoon character if you have something to work with! Look up a detailed picture of your favorite character, and use that to guide your drawing.XResearch source

You can even look up tutorials on how to draw specific characters to make life easier.

2Start with the basic shape in pencil. Sketch in circles, ovals, and rectangles to help get the figure in the correct perspective. Look closely at the face, for instance, to see if it’s more of a circle or oval, then sketch that into place. Maybe the torso is more of an oval shape, so make a light sketch for that. Add rectangles for the limbs, including ovals or circles for the arms.XResearch source

3Add in the hands, ears, and feet. If your character has unusual ears, such as Mickey Mouse’s round ears, sketch those in. Similarly, add in ovals or circles for the hands, depending on what the character’s hands look like.XResearch source

Don’t forget to add shoes or feet!

4Put in guidelines for the face and torso. Add a curving center line for the face, going vertically. The line should curve in the direction the character is facing. If the character is looking straight ahead, it can go straight down the face. Similarly, add a vertical line along the character’s torso, curving the direction the character is turning.XResearch source

For example, some characters will have very skinny arms and legs, while others will have more defined curves.

How To Draw Facial Expression/illustrate Feelings

When you draw cartoon characters, it is very important to also illustrate their emotion. To illustrate sadness, for instance, draw open eyes and pouting thoughts. Meanwhile, a large curving line that forms a smile can be drawn to illustrate happiness. Moreover, an O shape mouth accompanied by a smaller pupil is a great way to illustrate surprise or astonishment.

For anger, draw the eyelids down to illustrate a more contemptuous look. It is also helpful to show the teeth and elevate one side of the upper lip to illustrate that he is starting to lose his temper. What about if you want to illustrate fear? Bending eyebrows can be the way to illustrate that the character is scared and helpless. You can illustrate a more frantic look by drawing the eyebrows like a couple of inverted arches.

How To Draw Cartoon People

Drawing cartoon people is actually more simple than you think.

Just like with any other drawing people are made up of a simple arrangement of shapes.

To see what I mean, take a look at one of those wooden mannequins something many artists use, to practice drawing humans.

See how each part of the figure is actually just a shape?

If you think about it, drawing people can be more simple than drawing other things.

Thats because even though we may look different from each other on the outside, we all still have the same basic structure

How so?

Well for example

A persons head is pretty much always going to be a circle or an oval.

Similarly, the arms and legs are always going to be shaped like rectangles.

So, while the size of each shape that makes up each body part may change, the arrangement of these shapes will not!

And once you get this arrangement down, drawing cartoon people becomes much easier!

Learn how the eyes and mouth behave in different situations. Take a look at different ethnicities and the key features.

Whenever possible, try to give a little more realism to your characters. Observe the behavior of people in real life. Look at photos, study the style of your favorite artist, or search for inspiration on the Internet. It’s when we look to real life that we can extract quality information for our drawings. But remember: observing the real world does not mean copying! You want your character to be unique and not a copy of reality, right?

Notice that I’ve totally changed his expression just by following the steps below:

Making one eyebrow lower than the other
Cutting the eyes in half with the eyelashes
Adding a smile
Moving up the eye pupils to stay under the eyelashes

And that’s it! We got the expected result with just these few changes. The hair, ears, nose, chin, and the circular shape of the eyes are the same! Simple as that!

Varying The Location Of The Features

While the eye line is usually halfway between the top of the head and the chin, interesting cartoon characters of many different types can be created by raising or lowering this line. Even with balloons of the same shape a shift in the eye line can be the start of a new character. Keep in mind, however, that since the features are evenly balanced on each side of the center line, this line serves as a fixed guide for locating them.

1Sketch a round shape to start drawing the head.

2Sketch the shape of the cheek by adding a point at the bottom.

Since you are drawing a cartoon girl, keep the face narrow and feminine

3Sketch the eyes, nose, and mouth.

During this phase, keep in mind the proportions of a face. For example, a face is generally five eyes wide.

That being said, you can also manipulate proportions to reflect the girl’s character traits. If the character is innocent, this can be reflected in giving her large eyes.

4Sketch the details for the eyes, face, hair, and clothes.

Clothes are another opportunity to show character traits, occupation, and time period. For example, an edgy, 21st-century teen isn’t going to wear the attire of a 15th-century monk.

5Refine the sketch.

6Draw the outline over the sketch to finalize the artwork.

To trace the outline make sure to use a pen that will not smear while the sketch is being erased or the drawing colored.

7Erase and remove the sketch marks.

8Add color if desired. Keep in mind, there is more visual interest if colored

Try to limit your color pallet in order to not give the viewer a headache. If there are too many highly saturated colors, the viewer will not know where to look and may think your art is tacky.

Sketch a circle to start drawing the head.

2Sketch the shape of the cheek by adding a point at the bottom.

For the boy’s head try to make the chin boxy to give off a masculine look.

Now we will put into practice everything we have learned so far… Below you’ll find a basic cartoon face drawing template where we can practice our drawing skills in different positions:

Now, let’s add some random jaws, with different sizes and shapes…

It’s up to you now. There are so many easy cartoon characters to draw. I guess you can walk alone and explore the techniques I gave to you to complete the drawings. Remember that cartoon face drawing has two premises:

Simplify the face details in rounded shapes.
Exaggerate the facial expressions.

Once you’ve managed to sketch the direction of the eyes and have chosen the proper chins, try to use your creativity to build however many faces you want. You can be sure that, if you practice at least ten minutes per day with the techniques presented here, drawing cartoon faces will be as natural to you as breathing.

Let’s summarize! To reinforce what I said throughout the tutorial, let’s remember the proper steps for how to draw a cartoon face:

Make a circle that will represent the skull of our character.

Set the direction in which your character will be looking and draw the guidelines.

Make the outline of the eyes in an oval shape.

Draw the eye pupils . Don’t forget the eyelashes.

Choose the correct eyebrow, depending on the age and gender of your character.

Draw an appropriate jaw.

Draw simplified ears.
