Drawing As A Learnable Skill

~How to draw BODIES from the SIDE!~

This is an example of one of my students Before and After on my beginners drawing course this is the same mug drawn 4 weeks apart!

Just like every other activity, your skills will be improved as you learn basic principles and get some practice.

The key to learning to draw, just like learning to write, is good foundational instruction and then working until you own it.

No one said it would be easy nothing worth doing is. Yet just because it is challenging does not mean that, with time and hard work, you will be excellent.

Learn To Listen To Others

There’s no need to consider yourself the world’s most important person. A genuine interest in others’ lives can make people like you more because listening to others is a real art. If you listen to the other person attentively and show interest in your conversation they start feeling needed and even special.

Of course, you cannot remember everything your interlocutor said to you, but remembering their name is a big deal. Here’s an interesting trick. When a person introduces themselves, repeat their name: “Mike, nice to meet you.” And if you want people to remember you, use the same trick with your name: “Hello, I’m Susan. Susan Jones.”

Finishing Your Side Profile

Above the eye, add a curved eyebrow and begin adding in the details for the ear. With your pencil, go back over some of the features that youve already added so that theyre darker and more prominent. From here, youll be adding the final touchthe hair.

Draw swooping lines over the top of the face circle and along the left side. For a ponytail, add a half-oval or knot shape with wispy lines coming from this as individual hair strands.

Adding in simple pencil strokes for the hair is the final step in finishing your drawing!

Once youve added the final touches to the hair, your profile drawing is complete!

Defining Contours Of The Face

How to Draw a Person’s Shoulder (side view)

Contours of the face are very important virtual lines that help to define portraits likeness.

A contour should not be confused with an outline. In the drawing below, contours of cheekbones and jawlines are marked as contours. These lines are individual angles of which have to be measured on the model. Contours here describe the shape of the models face.

Defining The Cheekbones Curve

The cheekbones curve defines another important contour of the face. It bends downward from one cheekbone to another, with its lowest point at the base of the nose.

This virtual line is the border between the frontal part of the cheekbones and the upper jaw section.

A portrait artist can simply keep this line in mind rather than actually draw it. Nevertheless, as a part of the head construction, this line helps to build the portrait geometrically correct and proportionate.

Drawing Male And Female Mouths / Lips

Drawing a mouth can be a challenge, but you can draw realistic lips when you break the process into simple steps. Follow along to create a full, realistic mouth and avoid making simple mistakes, like defining hard edges, that beginning artists tend to make.

When studying the mouth, you will notice the upper lip is usually smaller and will appear darker than the bottom lip. It creates an M shape.

There are differences between male and female lips. Female mouths are much more defined and seem fuller and shinier. The edges of male lips are more subtle and are described by the shadows around them more than the edges themselves.

Drawing Lips | Female

1. Create a Line Drawing

Use the grid method and a mechanical pencil to create a line drawing of female lips.

2. Apply the Dark Patterns

When you are sure of your accuracy, carefully remove the grid lines with a kneaded eraser. Apply the dark patterns of the lips with a pencil.

Make the upper lip darker than the bottom one. This is because the upper lip angles in, and the bottom lip angles out.

3. Blend Tones and Light Highlights

Blend the tones smooth with a tortillion. Be sure to create the tones of the skin around the lips so that they look realistic. Use a kneaded eraser to lift the bright highlights of the lower lip to make them look moist and shiny.

Drawing Lips | Male

1. Create a Line Drawing

Use the grid method and a mechanical pencil to create a line drawing of male lips.

2. Add Dark Tones

Drawing Noses And Eyes Together

Once you learn the anatomy of the eye and how to draw it realistically, it is important to understand how to put two of them together along with other facial features like the nose. Here are some guidelines to remember:

  • The space between the eyes is one eye width.
  • Both eyes should be directly across from each other.
  • If you draw a vertical line down from the corner of the eye, it will line up with the edge of the nose.
  • Both eyes must be looking in the same direction. The pupil and iris must be the same in both.
  • Place the catch light in the same place on both eyes .

1. Create a Line Drawing

Use the grid method and a mechanical pencil to create a line drawing of a nose and eyes together. Notice how the vertical line drawn down from the corner of the eyes lines up with the edge of the nose. Place the eyes directly across from one another.

2. Apply Dark Tones, Fill in the Shadow Areas and Eyebrows

When you are sure of your accuracy, carefully remove the grid lines with a kneaded eraser. Apply the darkest tones with a pencil.

The pupils of the eyes are the darkest areas. Fill in the tones of the shadow areas and the eyebrows. The eyebrows should be shaded in as a shape first, before the hairs are applied.

3. Blend and Apply Highlights

Blend with a stump or tortillion. Very little of the paper should be left white, even in the whites of the eyes. Use a kneaded eraser for the small highlights seen in the brows and patterns within the pupils.

Drawing People In Action

Drawing Tutorial:Person in Side View
  • 1Sketch the wireframes to create the pose for your people in the scene .
  • 2Sketch the body shapes needed to help you build the figures’ bodies.
  • 3Sketch the details for the faces, clothes, features, etc.
  • 4Refine the sketch using a smaller tipped drawing tool.
  • 5Draw the outline over the sketch.
  • 6Erase and remove the sketch marks.

    Third Step Simple Shapes

In this step, lets first take a look at our stick person from the last lesson the part where you added circles for hands and feet, and rectangles for the rest of the body.

Remember its just like adding the skin and other organs to a human skeleton. And just how a skeleton is the framework for a human, the stick person is the framework for a cartoon person!

Repeat this same step here. But instead of mapping shapes onto an extremely simplified stick person, youre doing it to a more accurate representation of what a human actually looks like.

Take a look at how Ive mapped the shapes out. Very simple rectangles achieve the same goal as previously.

    Marking The Upper Eyelids Contours

With the inner corners of eyebrows in place we can now mark the curvature of the bridge of the nose. This line is a helpful landmark, which usually coincides with the level of the upper eyelids contours. Because every face is individual, you need to check this level on the model and adjust the drawing if required.

Symmetrical features like eyelids have to draw in pairs, making sure they are located on the same virtual horizontal line and have similar curvature. This helps to avoid the mistake of drawing one eye higher or lower than the other.

Dividing The Face Into Three Parts

The next step requires a know-how of the universal proportion of the face. All adult faces regardless of individual appearances share the same proportion the distance between the hair-root line and the bottom edge of the chin can be divided in three equal parts:

  • From the hair-root line to the eyebrow line
  • From the eyebrow line to the base of the nose
  • From the base of the nose to the bottom of the chin.
  • Observe on the model where the hair-root line is intended by nature and mark this line on the drawing. Divide the distance from that line to the bottom of the head into three equal parts by eye or using a pencil as a measuring stick. Do it as accurate as you can precise location of these three parts will help you in placing facial features correctly.

If the models head is on the same level as yours, you would see those three lines horizontal. When the model is located higher than a viewer, lines will be curved upward. The opposite is also true lines will be curved downward when a models head is located lower. The curvature depends on the view angle.

To keep things simple for this exercise, we draw a portrait at our eye-level.

How To Draw People – Drawing Faces From The Side

Let’s try some more easy cartoon drawings. I don’t know… I think Tommy needs a sister! He’s been very lonely out there. Let’s create a sister for him now, as if by magic:

Hey!!! How did you do that so fast? Very simple… Women tend to have more delicate facial structures. Here’s a female cartoon face drawing step-by-step guide:

    • Thin eyebrows
    • Small nose with fewer details
    • Long hair

That’s it. These are all the changes you need to make. Besides that, I took everything I could from Tommy, her brother. After all, they are siblings, right?

When you start to feel more comfortable, you can slowly create some more “realistic” details for your characters. Such as larger pupils…

    Drawing A Single Person

  • 1Start with the upper body first. For the head, sketch a circle, and then add a sharp curve at the bottom of it to form an upside-down egg shape.
  • 2Draw the neck next. You can usually just draw two short, straight lines roughly ears-width apart.
  • 3Draw a horizontal line perpendicular to the base of the neck but very lightly. This is a guideline for the figure’s collar bone. It should be about two to three head widths in length.
  • 4Sketch circles that are slightly smaller than the circle you drew for the head. The circle should be at either end of the collar guideline. These will be the shoulders.
  • 5Draw two ovals slightly longer than the vertical length of the head. Ensure that they are attached to the underside of the shoulder circles. These will be the upper arms/biceps.
  • 6Draw the torso at the points where the bicep ovals meet the shoulder circles. This can be achieved by drawing a kind of upside-down trapezoid shape for the chest, and two vertical lines for the abdominal trunk. Beneath that, draw an upside-down triangle for the pelvic area.
  • 7Draw a very small circle about half a head-length above the upside-down triangle. This is the belly button. To ensure your figure is proportionate, adjust the bicep ovals so that their bottoms are even with the height of the belly button. Draw a guideline if you need to.
  • 8Sketch two circles that are slightly larger than your shoulder circles. They should each be halfway inside the pelvic triangle. These are your hip joints.

  • How To Draw Cartoon Eyes: Step 1

Let’s learn how to draw cartoon eyes. To make the eyes, draw an oval shape with a slight tilt to the side at the top. Repeat on the opposite side. It is important to leave a gap between them of approximately the same size as an eye. As we are in the drafting phase, you can draw another eye in the center to serve as a measure.

We All Know How To Draw

Drawing doesnt come naturally to all of us. Nevertheless, as kids most of us learned the basics: pick up a pen, put it down on a piece of paper and move it around.

As kids we progressed quickly. Soon we got the handle on how to draw different shapes and make use of different colours. Our parents loved it, encouraged us to go on. Maybe they even taught us how to draw a face like this: 1 big round circle, 2 small circles for the eyes, 1 line for the nose, and 1 more for the mouth.

At a young age, we learned to build abstractions of what we saw in the real world. For example we can group together things like fingers, sun rays and tree trunks because they can all be represented by the abstract concept of a line. Similarly, eyes, torsos, faces are expressions of the abstract concept of a circle.

Being able to form abstractions is incredibly useful. Rather than thinking about what things mean or what they look like exactly, we can use fast short cuts: if you see that there is a big red object on 4 wheels quickly approaching, you might want to think car! instead of standing on the street appreciating the interplay of light & shadow on the bonnet. In less dramatic terms, forming abstractions is great because its linked to complexity reduction, conceptual thinking and problem solving³.

Back Of The Head Neck And Hair

Draw the top and back of the head by following along the oval and taking a plunge all the way down, creating the back of the neck. When you draw the front part of the neck, try not to go too far left past the middle of the head.

Draw a regular hairline on the forehead between lines A and B or a receding hairline above line A.

Add some finishing touches.. and youre all set! Practice this a few more times and when youre comfortable, try drawing without the two rulers on the side and bottom of your drawing!

    Drawing A Cartoon Person

  • 1Draw an oval and divide it into 4 equal sections. This will be the head of your cartoon person. Make the head bigger than you would for a realistic-looking person since cartoons usually have exaggerated proportions. Use a horizontal and vertical line to divide the oval into 4 equal parts.XResearch source
  • The horizontal and vertical lines in the oval will help you draw the face on your cartoon person later on.
  • 2Draw a cylinder for the neck and a rectangle for the torso. Draw the neck so its coming out of the bottom center of the oval. Then, draw a rectangle coming off the bottom of the neck to make your cartoon persons torso.XResearch source
  • If you want to draw a cartoon person with feminine features, make the top of the rectangle narrower and the bottom of the rectangle wider.
  • To draw a cartoon person with masculine features, broaden the top of the rectangle and make the bottom narrower.
  • 3Draw cylinders for the arms and legs and circles for the knees and elbows. You should draw 2 cylinders for each arm and leg and have 1 circle in between each pair. The circles will be the outlines of the joints in your drawing. You can position the arms and legs depending on what your cartoon person is doing, but generally, the arms should extend out of upper corners of the torso and the legs should extend down off of the bottom.XResearch source
  • Use straight, angular lines if youre drawing a masculine cartoon person and round, soft lines if youre drawing a feminine cartoon person.
