Next, I start making some very light marks to define the positions of the eyes, eyebrows, nose and mouth. With every line Im measuring carefully by eye along the axes I drew on my reference photo, and asking myself constant questions. In relation to the central vertical axis, how far along the horizontal axis line does each eye start and end? Which vertical distance is greater, the centre of the eyes to the bottom of the nose or the bottom of the nose to the bottom of the chin? Are the corners of the mouth horizontally aligned, or is one corner higher than the other, and if so then how much higher?

Its important to measure everything before you make a mark. People who dont draw tend to assume that artists are simply people with very good hand to eye coordination but really they are looking and measuring by eye all the time as they work, and this is something that anyone can learn to do.

Before I start drawing the girls pigtails I draw some lines around them on my reference photo with a Sharpie so I can clearly visualise the shape of the spaces that they occupy and gauge their size and position. I compare the widths of the pigtails with the width of each half of the face.

Im next going to show you my pencils and erasers, because once I reach this stage of building up tones I tend to draw almost as much with my erasers as with my pencils, layering my pencil shading and then softening and cutting in highlights with my erasers.

I Study And Contrast Different Areas Of Tone Within My Reference Photo And Start To Shade In The Very Darkest And Lightest Areas On My Drawing

Once Ive finished mapping in the features of the face, Ill completely erase my axis lines using my battery eraser or my eraser pencil. I then set aside the reference photo with the lines drawn on it and start examining the other copy I printed. Firstly Ill consider, where are the very darkest tones I can see in the image?

Often youll find the darkest spots within the pupils of the eye. However you might also find that the the darkest tones are within the nostrils, in the corners of the mouth, in the shadows of the ears or the places where the fingers are pressed together. I try not to make any assumptions but to search out these very darkest areas and then shade them onto my drawing using the 6B or 8B pencil. Im still measuring constantly by eye before making any mark, comparing the size and shape of each area of tone with those around it.

Next I identify the brightest areas in the image. These will usually be tiny highlights reflected in the iris or pupil of the eyes or in the tear ducts, but they can appear on any moist area such as the lower lids or on the lips . These tiny highlights are fiddly to draw but crucial to capturing the expression and life in someones eyes, so I will draw the outline them with my very automatic pencil and leave them as completely blank paper. If I need to Ill brighten them up at the end using my battery eraser.

Complete The Skin Shading

How I Draw Faces | Updated Tutorial

Start from the left side of the face and work from the outside to the center. This will help to keep the shadow effect that youve already started on the left side of the nose. Shade with your darkest pencil along the outside edge of the face, moving lighter as you approach the underside of the center of the eye. Keep the shading light here until you start to reach the dark shading thats already in place next to the nose.

Adding darker shading on the side helps to mirror the shadow effect across that side of the face.

Working up to the forehead, keep your shading light as you move up the outside edge above the left eyebrow. As you shade towards the hairline at the top center of the face, keep your pencil as light as possible. The middle and right of the forehead should be some of your lightest shading to highlight the shadow coming down the left side of the face.

As you shade, think about where light would naturally hit the face and lighten your touch accordingly.

Continue to shade lightly across the right side of the face, adding in slightly darker shading directly underneath the center of the lower lip. As you move onto the neck, shade from left to right, keeping the dark shading for around three-quarters of the neck with a small triangle of lighter shading on the right side. Finally, shade the inside of the ears on both sides in both light and dark patterns to reflect where light would naturally fall.

Fill in some of the finer details as you go.

On Another Note Drawing The Iris

Weve talked about the size of the eye, lets now talk about yet another important element when drawing expressions: the iris!

When drawing the iris you should draw it small for an angrier expression.

The contrast between a small dot for the iris and a vast white around it, speaks to us, visually, of urgency, panic, and even lunacy.

The size you decide for the iris can make your character look like a real psycho or someone that has completely lost their mind.

For example, someone whos so angry that is way past any kind of logic and reason.

Drawing it too big, can make it look like the character isnt phased at all with what happened, which is also something you can make use of.

A character that is beyond human emotions or a very evil character that doesnt really care whats happening and how much destruction they cause.

Once again, you can make the same kind of exercise as before, draw the eyes with different iris sizes, scaling them up and compare each other and how they feel.

Other than the iris, you can also play with the eyebrows and eye size.

Mix and match them and see how many different results you can get!

Shading The Area Above The Upper Eyelids

The area below eyebrows has darker tones than upper eyelids. So, we could build up tonal values to block the area above the eyes.

Go light with rendering upper eyelids. We will come back to darken these tonal values to required depth later on. It is a good technique to build tones gradually. A proficient way of applying pencil strokes is along objects contours. Also, if you are drawing in graphite pencil, smudging pencil marks is a big no-no. I will explain why later.

Indicating The Plane Under The Eyebrows

With the curved line of eyebrows defined, we can caw block shaded area below it. In most cases, the source of light is above a models head, therefore it will be a shade under eyebrows. So, we mark this shade in light tone applying very light pencil pressure.

As you see, we are still defining big masses without any attention to facial features like eyes, nose and mouth. Drawing such facial features before the main shape of the head is build proficiently is like decorating walls of a house that yet to be constructed. This sequence will help you to ensure correct proportions of the portrait and will result in greater likeness when we do the rest of the portrait.

How to Draw Someone’s Likeness?

The common mistake done by everyone is we dont look at proportions i.e. it may get distorted. Size of face and body may vary. So take care of the proportions. A simple way is to divide the person into different parts and then combine them.

Step 1 Draw rectangular shape for the body and draw two half ovals over the breadths to show the shoulders. Next draw a straight a line from the middle of the rectangle with length twice as much of the length of the rectangle.

Step 2 Draw separate ovals for the head, shoulder and knees. Join the head with the rectangle as shown.

Step 3 Now draw circles for the elbows and feet. We then draw a pair of curved lines along the rectangle and connect them with the knee to show the body shape.

Step 4 Now connect the shoulder with the elbow then to the body for drawing the hands. Nest connect the thighs with knee and then to the feet. Make sure that the proportions are right, thighs will be thicker than legs.

Step 5 Erase the circular and rectangular outlines. Mark the neck and shoulders.

Step 6 Add details to the image by marking the eyes and mouth and shading the clothes.
