To Create A Stairwell

  • In order to generate a stairwell, a second floor needs to be generated. Select Build> Floor> Build New Floor from the menu.
  • Choose Derive new 2nd floor plan from the 1st floor plan, then click OK.
  • In the 2nd Floor Defaults dialog that appears, specify your desired properties. For this example the preset defaults are used.
  • Select Tools> Floor/Reference Display> Down One Floor to return to the first floor. In Home Designer 2019 and prior program versions, navigate to Tools> Reference Floors> Down One Floor instead.
  • Using the Select Objects tool, click on the staircase to select it and then click on the Auto Stairwell edit button.Note:If you do not see the Auto Stairwell button on the Edit toolbar, a stairwell is already present, an Open Below room has already been specified above the stairs on the second floor, or the stairs do not reach the platform above.
  • Now in the 3D view, see that a hole has been cut out of the ceiling.
  • Close the existing 3D view, go to the second floor, and create another 3D view. From here you can see that the stairwell opening has a railing around it, and there is an opening at the top of the stairs between the wall in the railing.
  • The Objects Below 4 Feet

The objects below 4 feet often include the floor itself, front porches, decks, balconies, banisters, walls not reaching the ceiling, stairs going down, the lower steps of stairs going up, countertops, and other furniture.

These objects are seen from above, so their representation is only the way they look on the top. We usually use continuous fine or medium lines to represent them.

Sometimes, the closer the objects are to 4 feet, the heavier the lines can be.

Representing Stairs in plan in AutoCAD and on Architectural Drawings

  • On the Break Line panel of the Staircase Specification dialog that opens, check the Has Breakline box.
  • Select the break line Style from the drop-down list.
  • Specify the Distance From Start, which is the distance from the front of the stair segment to the break line, measured from the staircase’s center line.
  • Specify the Breakline Angle. An angle of 0 produces a break line that is perpendicular to the sides of a straight staircase.
  • Specify the Gap After Break if desired. This creates a second break line and specifies the distance between the two. A value of 0 produces no gap.
  • Specify the Break Symbol Size, which is the total height of the break symbol measured from the top corner to the bottom corner.
  • The Current Floor Display section controls the appearance of the portion of the staircase located after the break line on the floor where the stairs are drawn.
  • The Floor Above Display section controls the appearance of the portion of the staircase located before the break line, as seen from the floor above where the stairs are drawn.

We ran into this issue when our concrete footings and post pads were being poured. Luckily I was watching the pour when I noticed the pads for the structural posts were being poured in the wrong location. I talked with the crew and found they had an old set of drawings. We moved the wood framing for the pads and then hand shoveled the poured concrete over to the correct location.

Stairs are an essential part of many construction projects, from decks to interiors. It can seem daunting to think of making your own, but theyre actually made of just three main parts: stringers, treads, and risers. Stringers are diagonal 2 in × 12 in boards that support people’s weight as they walk up the stairs. Treads are the top baseboards onto which you step, and risers are placed perpendicularly under each tread. Measure and cut the stringers accurately, and the other parts will mostly fall into place.

There are basically two ways to make your own blueprints.

    • Using home design software.
    • Drafting them by hand.

There is also the option of doing a bit of both.

Some may ask why would anyone make their own blueprints by hand when we have many relatively inexpensive home design software products available.

    Here are some good reasons:

    • It takes a long time to truly learn how to use the house design programs to completely generate the cross sections, framing and other blueprint details that you need to get your building plans approved.
    • Most of the inexpensive programs do not generate the kind of details required for full construction drawings.

Most of the home design programs can produce accurately dimensioned floor plan drawings of the quality required for your building permit. But for some programs this is as far as you can go with the construction drawings. What views remain are the cross-sections, elevation views, and any necessary framing plans. This is where you may have to make your own blueprints by hand or use a more full-featured .

I am not suggesting to stay away from home design programs entirely. Rather a good approach if you want to keep costs down is to do some drawing with design software and some hand drafting.
