How To Draw The American Flag

Now youll need to draw several radiating lines coming from the area where you drew your dot. Draw these lines in the three sections where your stripes will be going.

Skip the section where your stars will be, for now. We will get to that section later.

Draw your first line going from the dot to somewhere near the corner of your paper.

Add a second line on the other side of the corner.

Three more lines were added to that first section. You want to make sure you have an even number of spaces between your lines. If you have an odd number of sections, your pattern will not work out correctly.

Do the same thing for the next section. I find it easiest to begin with the corners when starting each section.

Complete this section by adding more lines.

As you can see, this section has an even number of sections because more lines were needed to fill the larger section up. Just keep in mind that the total number of sections in your op art drawing needs to be an even number.

Go ahead a fill in the final stripes section with your lines.

American Flag Optical Illusion

This next part is where the optical illusion takes place. Start by drawing a curved line in the first section of your drawing.

Fill in the rest of that section with more curved lines. Keep in mind that these lines will represent the stripes of your flag when youre spacing them out. Make sure you curve the lines in the same direction.

For the next section, curve your lines in the opposite direction. Draw your curved lines so they touch the ones next to them.

Move onto the next section, curving your lines the opposite direction from the ones next to it. Again, connecting your lines from section to section.

Continue working your way around your drawing moving from section to section. Keep your lines connected, and alternate the direction they curve.

Weve finally made it to the section where the stars will go. Youll probably want to use a pencil first for this section.

Draw your lines the same way you did for the sections where the stripes are. Dont forget to draw an even number of sections between your radiating lines.

Draw in a few stars and then go over your lines with your black marker.

Draw The Rest Of The Flag Outline

Hopefully you still have your ruler handy, as you will be needing it for this next step of your American flag drawing.

To complete the outline of the flag, simply draw the remaining three sides of the flag as shown in the reference image. You should end up with a perfect rectangle.

To get the angles of the corners right, you could use a tool like a set square to help you as you draw.

Op Art Drawing Guidelines

Lets get started on our drawing by laying out some basic guidelines. We first talked about this technique in How to Use Shapes to Draw. Placing some guides down first makes more advanced drawings much easier to complete successfully.

Begin by drawing a dot on your paper. Our finished drawing will represent the American flag, so your dot needs to be place at the inside corner of where the stars of your flag will be.

This is where your stars and stripes meet. Im using cardstock for my drawing, but any kind of paper will work.

Next, draw a horizontal line across your paper using a ruler. You want your line to go through the dot you just drew on your paper.

Now draw a vertical line, also going through the dot you drew. Im using a black marker for my drawing so its easier for you to see. You can use a marker or a pencil to lay out your drawing. It really just depends on your level of confidence.

However, if you use pencil for your initial drawing youll need to go back over your lines with a marker or black pencil.

The top left quadrant will be where your stars will go. This section is the most difficult to draw, so well leave that for last. The other three quadrants will all be the stripes of your flag.

Learn How To Draw The American Flag Blowing In The Wind With Beautiful Wavy Stripes Those Curves Have So Much More Dimension Than A Flat Flag Does

The Flag of the United States of America features thirteen equal stripes of red switching with stripes of white. The blue rectangle in the upper corner holds fifty white stars representing the 50 states which make up the United States of America. The stripes represent the 13 original colonies which gained independence from Britain. The flag of the United States has other names as well. It is also known as the Stars and Stripes, Star-Spangled Banner and most famously, the nickname Old Glory.

Now students that are learning about the American flag and want to learn how to draw one blowing in the wind, have some tutorial help. The stripes do make a very dynamic drawing when they are curved, it just takes some extra time and care to get them right.

That being said, I would encourage young students to not get overly concerned that they have the exact right number of stripes and stars in their drawing. Especially if they are drawing a smaller one. As long as their flag starts and ends with red stripes, and their block of white stars looks about as full as my sample, their American flag drawing is bound to look really beautiful and everyone will know exactly what it is.

How To Make An American Flag

Step1. Draw a stick like structure as shown in the picture. After drawing the stick, add the base as well as the top part of your flags body.

Step2. Add a curve to your lower base. This will give a folded effect to your flag.

Step3. Make a square shaped box on the top right corner of your flag.

Step4. Add horizontal lines to the rest of the portion, except for the square region.

Step5. Add stars to the square region. Be very particular with the pattern of your stars. They should be similar to the original pattern, in order to make your drawing look more realistic.

Step6. Finally, you are left with the coloring part! Take out your colors and lets begin. Fill the colors as you might observe in the original American flag.

Step6. Color the horizontal striped portion with red color. Remember that you need to leave space between every horizontal line that you create. One line should be red and the next one- white. Follow this pattern.

Step7. For the square region, let the stars remain white. But color the rest of the portion with blue color as shown in the picture.

Materials For How To Draw The American Flag

    • Pencil. The Ticonderoga brand are the most reliable, make nice dark lines when you need them, and are the easiest to erase. Buying the pre-sharpened ones will save busy teachers a lot of time.
    • Eraser. Large ones you can hold in your hand do a much better job than just the pencil tip erasers, especially when erasing leftover pencil lines after tracing.
    • BlackSharpie Marker. These fine point permanent marker pens make nice black outlines, have a good tip for coloring, and never bleed when they get wet. Use them with good ventilation and add extra paper underneath to protect your tables.
    • Prang Crayons. These are a bit softer than other crayons so they sometimes look like oil pastels. They also have a some nice brown shades that Crayola does not have unless you buy their larger boxes.
    • Crayola Crayons. The reliable brand that always works well. The 24 pack has some of my favorite golden orange and yellow colors that seem a bit richer and warmer than the ones Prang has.

Finish Off Your American Flag Drawing With Some Color

Now that your flag is drawn, theres one step left to finish off your American flag drawing!

The flag is well known for the red white and blue color scheme, so that is what we went for in our reference image.

For an extra touch in our drawing, we colored in the stars with a light yellow as well. You could also leave these white if you prefer!

Then, you could use your favorite shades of blues and reds for the rest of the flag. For the stripes, you will alternate with red and white, and it should end up with red being the color for the first and last stripes.

When coloring in a picture with smaller details like this, it can be helpful to use art mediums that allow for precision to make your life easier.

Some examples of mediums that you can use would be colored pens, markers or colored pencils. If you would like to use paint then youll want to use a thin-tipped paintbrush if you can.

Which colors and art mediums will you use to finish off this image?

    Civil War And The Flag

Prior to the Civil War, the American flag was rarely seen outside of military forts, government buildings and ships. During the American War of Independence and War of 1812 the army was not even officially sanctioned to carry the United States flag into battle. It was not until 1834 that the artillery was allowed to carry the American flag, the army would be granted to do the same in 1841. However, in 1847, in the middle of the war with Mexico, the flag was limited to camp use and not allowed to be brought into battle.

This all changed following the shots at Fort Sumter in 1861. The flag that had been flying over the fort was allowed to leave with the union troops as they surrendered. It was taken across northern cities and this spurned on a wave of “Flagmania”. The stars and stripes, which had no real place in the public conscious, suddenly became a part of the national identity. The flag became a symbol for the union and the sale of flags exploded at this time. In a reversal, the 1847 army regulations would be dropped and the flag was allowed to be carried into battle. Some wanted to remove the stars of the southern states that seceded but Abraham Lincoln refused believing it would give legitimacy to the confederate states.

    Historical Progression Of Designs

If a new U.S. state were to be admitted, it would require a new design of the flag to accommodate an additional star for a 51st state. 51-star flags have been designed and used as a symbol by supporters of statehood in various jurisdictions.

Potential statehood candidates include U.S. territories, the national capital , or a state created from the partition of an existing state. Residents of the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico have each voted for statehood in referendums . Neither proposal has been approved by Congress.

In 2019, District of Columbia mayor Muriel Bowser had dozens of 51-star flags installed on Pennsylvania Avenue, the street linking the U.S. Capitol building with the White House, in anticipation of a hearing in the U.S. House of Representatives regarding potential District of Columbia statehood. On June 26, 2020, the House voted to establish D.C. as the 51st state however, the bill has not and is not expected to pass in the Senate, and the administration of President Donald Trump indicated he would veto the bill if passed by both chambers. It died in the Republican-controlled Senate at the end of the 116th Congress. On January 4, 2021, Delegate Norton reintroduced H.R. 51 early in the 117th Congress with a record 202 co-sponsors.

    Creating An Optical Illusion Shading

ð¨ How to Draw a Waving American Flag

Heres where the magic really happens. By adding in some shading, youll be able to increase the effect of the optical illusion. Using a black colored pencil, add some shading to the edges of all the red areas.

Do this for the darker blue areas as well.

Use a gray colored pencil to shade in the rest of the areas.

American Flag Drawing Op Art Stripes

When drawing your stripes, you need to make curved lines. The process is similar to the one we learned in Bullseye Op Art Drawing. By drawing the lines curved, youll begin to create the optical illusion.

Draw your first curved line in the first section towards the top. The space between this line and the top edge of your paper needs to be slightly larger than the rest of your lines because this is where your stars will go.

Continue drawing curved lines down your paper until you reach the bottom. You want your lines to be fairly evenly spaced apart.

Move onto the next section, but this time curve your lines in the opposite direction. Your lines should line up with each other from left to right.

Add some stars to your first section on the top left.

Drawing An Optical Illusion With Color Gradation

You can use whatever medium you want for your colors. Colored pencils were used for this example. I typically use Prismacolor colored pencil for all of my work, but because I was doing this with my students, I used Crayola colored pencils.

You can learn more about Prismacolor colored pencils at, Prismacolor Colored Pencil Review 48 Pack.

In the first stripe underneath where your stars are, use red to color in that section. Use gradation to make your edges darker than the center. This will add to the optical illusion.

To do this, add multiple layers of color. Gradually build up the color a little at a time, making it darker at the edges and fading it out towards the center.

The section directly below the red and to the right of the red will be left white. You should never have two adjacent sections the same color.

Continue working on your stripes until every other one is colored red.

When youre finished with all of your stripes, use blue to fill in the color around your stars.

You can also use the blue to add shadows to all of the white stripes. Or black can be used for the shadows on the white.

Thats it, youre all done. You have many options when working on your flags. I like using markers for most of my work because of how bright and colorful they are.

For the price, Bic markers are my personal choice. You can read our full product review at, Bic Intensity Marker Review Fine Point.
