Measure And Draw The Fingers

Learn to draw easily: How to draw the back of a hand

To determine the length of each finger, measure the length from the wrist to the knuckles and duplicate that. The dotted line marks the maximum finger height. Our fingers vary in length and since the middle finger is the longest, we will use it as a reference to find the height of the other 3 fingers. To do that, draw a curved line that is similar to the first one drawn in step 1.

Drawing Anime Hands Proportions

If youre familiar with my tutorials, you know that I am not a big proponent of learning exact proportions for everything. Proportions will change depending on what you want to draw. Proportions change given the perspective and foreshortening of the subject. Over time you must learn to gauge proportions and correct based on what you are drawing. However, there are a couple of rules that are very helpful in drawing the hand and we can use them for drawing anime hands.

How To Draw A Hand Reaching Step By Step

This type of hand pose can be used when a whoever you are drawing is reaching for something. For example reaching for a helping hand or reaching to grab onto a ledge when climbing.

As the hand is tilted forward it will appear vertically narrower then if you were looking at it with the palm facing directly towards you. Keep this in mind when drawing.

Begin To Find Gesture And Forms

How to draw hands front and back

Since I’m working digitally here, I will knock back the opacity of the planar drawing to begin to find the forms I see on my own hand. If you’re working traditionally, be sure to start out light and gradually build up volume and forms with heavier lead only toward the end of your study.

From here, I can use the planar view as a guide to help me lay the forms of my hand as I look at it. I’m careful to take note of how the forms curve around each other and I’m also mindful of the silhouette of my hand. You can see where I’ve deviated from the pink line and instead used it as a guide to find where the forms turn in space.

Muscles Of The Hand Back View:

In the back of the hand we only need to concern ourselves with three items:

  • 1st dorsal interosseous muscle between the thumb and the index finger. It originates at the carpal group , below the base of the thumb, and its insertion is at base of thumb and base of the index finger.
  • Abductor digiti minimi It originates at the pisiform bone of the carpal group with insertion at the base of the little finger
  • Tendons covering the fingers. The thumb and the little finger have their own extensors. However, the fingers 2 through 4 have them grouped as tendons of extensors digitorum a muscle of the forearm. The little fingers tendon is of the extensor digiti minimi muscle of the forearm. Both it and the extensors digitorum originate at the humerus bone by the elbow. You can tell where,if you place your left hand on your right elbow and wiggle the fingers of your right hand, you should feel extensor muscles flexing with your right hand. The tendons covering the thumb do not go to the elbow, originating about halfway at the ulna.
  • How To Draw Sofa

If you follow the steps and recommendations of our instructions, you can easily learn how to correctly depict furniture

. In this article, well show you how to draw a sofa. Even a child can cope with the task. Lets get started? Today we will draw a sofa with a pencil. We break down the whole process step by step into separate steps.

As a result, you will see that drawing such a piece of furniture like a sofa for a room is not at all difficult. For work, we need a pencil, an eraser, a piece of paper. If youre not sure if you can draw straight lines, then stock up on a ruler. And it would be nice to have colored pencils for coloring.

At the first stage, draw a kind of rectangle, divided into three parts. One horizontal line divides the figure in half, separating the back of the sofa. Another line shows the borders of the cushions on the furniture. On the back of the sofa, lets sketch three soft pillows. Next, lets add a couple of small segments, which will then be the armrests.

In the middle part of the sketch, draw three lines, these will be the pillows on which they sit. At the bottom of the sofa, draw a long line and two small vertical ones.

Now add a couple of small pillows on the sides. Draw lines on the seat cushions. Do not forget to finish drawing the nuances of the remaining pillows. Draw legs at the bottom of the sofa. As you can see, our furniture has already become more like a sofa.

Draw The Folded Fingers & Smaller Bends Of The Hand

Add the individual shapes of the two folded fingers as well as the smaller curves of the hand. These will be along the bottom of the palm and between the other two fingers. Erase the extra lines from the previous step so that your drawing looks similar to the example above.

You can see the estimated placement of the joints for the peace sign pose above. The joints overlapped by other parts of the hand are not shown to avoid making the drawing too confusing.

Bonus: How To Draw Hands Using Bridgman Construction

how to draw back of hand/pencil sketch

Lets now go through a six-line construction method for drawing the hand found in Bridgmans anatomy books.

This method of hand construction begins by drawing the inactive and the active sides of the hand. Depending on position, if the thumb side is the action side, the little finger side is the inaction side and the opposite is true. In this method of drawing the hand, the inaction side is drawn as a single line straight with the arm.

There are six lines total for construction in this type of drawing and three of these lines are always unchanged:

  • one from the thumbs metacarpal to the outer base of the index finger,
  • the second from that point to the top middle of the metacarpal of the second finger, and
  • the third line from that point to the base of the little finger.
  • There are 3 construction lines remaining. Two are attributed to the action side depending on the gesture, and only one to the inaction side. This is of course not the final drawing, but lines used to construct a believable gesture in hand drawing. See below diagram, notice how construction changes depending on the action side of the hand.

Although this is a very simple method to construct the hand, the proportions in this method still have to be resolved, and it seems like Bridgeman only used it for the construction of the palm. Although at its simplest form I think you can use it to construct the back view as well as I did in the above example.

    Note Where The Fingers Part

When drawing hands, it is easy to get confused about where the fingers split.

The position where the fingers start is different if you are looking at it from the back of the hand or from the palm of the hand.

The reason for this is that there is a thin layer of skin between the fingers.

When viewed from the dorsal side of the hand, the point where the fingers separate almost coincides with the position of the metacarpophalangeal joint.

In contrast, when viewed from the palm side, the fingers are divided above the metacarpophalangeal joint.

This is why fingers look longer when viewed from the back of the hand and shorter when viewed from the palm of the hand.

If youve been following this series on learning to shoot a compound bow, you should now be comfortable with everything from your stance the way you align your feet and body before beginning the shot to gripping the bow, nocking the arrow and positioning your release aid. That means youre ready for the fun part: drawing the bow!

Before detailing the proper way to draw a bow, heed this caution: Dont try to draw a bow thats too heavy for you. Instead, be sure to visit your local archery store, where you can be fitted for a bow thats the right weight and draw length for you. Why is this so important?

To draw a compound bow, your hands should start about at nose height, with your grip hand and the release hand extended in front of you and in line with your target. Photo Credit: World Archery

Issue 1: This person is strong from participating in other sports or activities. Because theyre muscular, they think they can draw the same bow poundage as someone with much less strength and muscle. Archery, however, uses much different muscles than those used in other sports or weightlifting. So just because you can lift fifty-pound dumbbells doesnt mean you can draw a fifty-pound bow.

Keeping your grip hand steadily extended at nose height, you then use your release hand to start pulling the bowstring toward your face. You should begin inhaling as the string comes back. Photo Credit: World Archery

    Drawing Fingernails With Nail Polish

For painted nails you would generally want to first draw long nails and then simply fill them with the appropriate color. One thing you may want to do though is leave a tiny highlight inside each nail. This will make them appear shiny .

If you want to draw the anime/manga style nails with the open inner ends you can still fill the shapes of the nails with color but leave the gaps in the outlines.

    Always Use A Reference

Its important to use reference images, no matter your illustration skill level. Whether you look at a photo, take pictures of your own hand or ask a friend to model different hand gestures, have a guide at your side. There will always be something unexpected and different, even if youve drawn them a million times, says Daviscourt.

Create The Illusion Of A Light Source

We see objects and make sense of the world around us based on the light. It is the light that informs us of the form of the objects that we see. Every drawing needs to have a defined light source. We can create the illusion of light through our use of value, or the darkness or lightness of a color.

The light source is defined by factors that are related to value. On the side of the hand that receives the light source, we will see highlights which are communicated by tints . Areas that protrude will likely be areas of highlight.

On the opposite side of the light source, we will see shadows. These areas will be communicated through darker values. Areas that recede will likely be areas of shadow.

Make sure to include a full range a value when you draw hands. Remember, it is the value that tells the viewer about the form of the hand.

Nothing drives me crazier than to see a student draw a figure and hide the hands! There’s no need for that! It’s not hard to draw hands!

Drawing Hands Tutorial 01: How to draw a basic hand front and back in Sketchbook Pro

To finish the drawing draw the lines along the palm of the hand and the fingernails. Again same as the other poses the nail on the thumb will be viewed on an angle and should be drawn narrower.

To help that the sections of the fingers from the last joint to the tip are at a slight angle draw the fingernails just a tiny bit farther away from the tips. This will make the bottom of the fingers appear like they are angled facing more towards the viewer.

    How To Draw Upright Hands

Start with a relatively easy position: a hand held upright with the back of the hand facing you. Once you know what to look for when drawing hands, you will be able to deal with different gestures.

  • Look at the knuckles at the base of your fingers. You will use them as construction markers for building the picture of your hand.
  • Notice that the line of the knuckles is curved and that they are unequally spaced. From there, rough out the shape of the back of the palm. Ask yourself what the geometric shape of the palm is and measure its width and length. Note that the palm is not a square.

  • Measure the length of the longest finger in relation to the length of the palm and mark this point on your drawing. Then find the second set of knuckles . Note how they are aligned on a curve. Plot these locations, paying special attention to the overall proportions: how far are they from the end of the longest finger and how close are they to the top of the palm.
  • Yes, as you probably guessed, the next step is to place the third set of knuckles, which are the farthest from the base of the hand. Once again, pay attention to the relationship with the rest of the hand as you draw them.
  • Notice that in this position the thumb can be aligned with the first finger’s base and middle knuckles.

  • Now connect the marks you have made to form a basic construct of a hand. Now move on to draw the contours of the individual fingersbut keep in mind the bone structure underneath.

Womens hands, like the face, are significantly different from mens. In women, the bone is smaller, more refined forms and muscles, and, in general, the plans of the face and hands are more rounded.

If the middle finger along its length occupies half the length of the palm, then this characterizes the female hand. Even though the female hand is refined, it is capable of quite a strong work of the tendons at the time of grabbing something. Subtleties are added by long nails, oval.
