Grand Canyon Celebration Of Art

How to draw the Grand Canyon

Hosted each year by Grand Canyon Conservancy, the Grand Canyon Celebration of Art is an annual event that includes 6 days of art related events followed by a 3 month long exhibition in Kolb Studio on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.

Every September, park visitors and residents have an opportunity to watch artists paint Grand Canyon as they seek to represent the shifting light and shadow, amazing land forms, and vibrant colors of this vast landscape. Each artist brings a completed studio piece with them and then spends a number of days creating more artwork on the South Rim, on the North Rim, at Phantom Ranch and at Indian Garden during the Plein Air at the Canyon Event. At the end of the week, on Saturday, the Quick Draw Event takes place in the historic district of Grand Canyon Village. During the auction that immediately follows the Quick Draw event, park residents and visitors have the opportunity to bid on the paintings that they watched being created that morning, and to bring a piece of Grand Canyon home.Proceeds from this event support the goal of funding an art venue at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. This permanent home will ensure that future generations of park visitors will be able to view the stunning art collection in the Grand Canyon National Park Museum and Grand Canyon Conservancy Collections.

Consider A Winter Visit

If you want to see the Grand Canyon in a way that most havent, consider visiting in the winter. Snow certainly makes taking photos more challenging, but you may be rewarded with a rare and beautiful shot of the Canyon blanketed in snow. Plus, there are fewer visitors competing for golden photo opportunities in the winter, with the fewest visitors in January. Just remember that the North Rim closes annually from mid-October to mid-May, so if you want a winter shot, consider visiting the South or West Rim.

Add Tone And Shading To Add Depth

We can actually leave it at the line art stage. If you added a label Canyon of Corpses or similar, the reader would know precisely what they were looking at and could follow it across the whole map.

But were going to go one step further and add some tone to deepen the canyon. This is done in three steps.

    Getting To The Grand Canyon

Most visitors to the Grand Canyon fly into Las Vegas or Phoenix. Theres also a small airport in Flagstaff, just an hour from the South Rim, and some North Rim travelers fly into Salt Lake City. No matter where you land youll need to rent a car, as public transit is extremely limited in this part of the U.S.

Once you arrive at the Grand Canyon, you might need to park your car and take a shuttle bus to get around. Grand Canyon West is closed to private vehicles and operates a hop-on, hop-off shuttle around the park, while certain parts of the South Rim are only accessible by bus. A shuttle service makes the 4.5-hour trip between the North and South Rims its particularly handy for rim-to-rim hikers. The North Rim is fully open to private vehicles.

One fun alternative way to arrive at the South Rim is via the Grand Canyon Railway, which runs from the town of Williams, Arizona, into the heart of the park, allowing for a half-day of exploring before returning in the afternoon.

Sketch Hike With Heather L Johnson

During her Artist in Residence, Heather L. Johnson conducted two guided sketch hikes along the rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Participants walked from Trailview Overlook to Powell Point on the Rim Trail, practicing careful observation along the way. Heather encouraged them to walk attentively, and select a subject to draw using all of their senses, paying special attention to how the drawing makes them feel. At the end of each sketch hike, Heather led a group discussion to reflect and exchange experiences and ideas. Explore photos from Heather’s residency and sketch hikes on Flickr.

    One The Preliminary Study

How to draw the Grand Canyon

    10/06/03… the beginning

As I’ve indicated many times I do most of my paintings on masonite panels. In these photos you can see how I build an attached frame on the backside, quite similar to a canvas frame. It gets sanded and spackled and sanded again. I then glue the paper drawing to the rough surface of the masonite. Here you can see these steps. You can also see my pencil drawing of the canyon panorama, or at least a chunk of the final painting, for practice. I often do not use a drawing but the canyon is so specific it must be recognizable. I am forced to “paint within the lines.” This practice panel is 26″ x 16″.

    10/09/03

When the above process is dry I do two things. On top of the paper drawing I paint a clear coat of acrylic gel to both seal the surface and to provide a nice brush stroke texture.

Then I paint several coats of black paint on the sides. While this is drying I began to do some color sketching.

I want to soften and simplify this palette to create a more pleasing finished piece, something easier to live with over time. On a small panel previously painted solid with Burnt Umber I painted this extremely simply sketch. I’m not interested in accuracy of the drawing at this point, just the color, the simplest color possible. I’ve reduced my sketch to about six colors to see if it works. Any experienced painter will tell you of the freedom within a limited palette. It’s a start.

When To Visit The Grand Canyon

When planning a trip to the Grand Canyon, consider visiting the South Rim any time other than summerespecially if youre hoping to hike all the way down to the bottom of the canyon, where temperatures can soar above 100 degrees Fahrenheit in July and August. Summer is also the busiest time of year lodging in the park is expensive and sells out quickly, and viewpoints along the rim can be jammed with crowds.

The South Rim is open all year round, and youll find pleasant temperatures and smaller crowds in the shoulder seasons . Even a winter visit can be rewarding bundle up and enjoy the sight of the canyon dusted with snow.

Thanks to its higher altitude, the North Rim has a cooler climate and is closed between mid-October and mid-May. Fortunately, this part of the park sees fewer visitors and isnt usually crowded even during the summer high season. Consider visiting in the fall, when the Kaibab National Forest erupts in vibrant colors.

Grand Canyon West, open year-round, is less crowded outside the summer months.

    Block In The Canyon Floor

A simple trick here is to make the full canyon a little darker than everything else that will push it into the background and indicate its deeper than the surrounding terrain. If youre using colour, you can also move it a little towards blue/grey and knock down the saturation. Thatll push it into the background.

Ive used light pencil strokes here. But if youre using photoshop or Gimp, you can use a hard round brush on 5-10% opacity. If that means nothing to you, theres a walkthrough of cast shadows in this Gimp/Photoshop tutorial.

    Giving The Cliffs Height

HOW TO DRAW The Grand Canyon (charcoal sketch tutorial)

Begin adding some vertical strokes at each of the points along the ridge, and have them slope down to the river. Now it is really starting to look more like a canyon that is being carved into the landscape.

You can see that at the top the edge of the cliff now obscures part of the river so that it looks like it going behind it. Experiment with this as it really gives a pretty interesting effect.

    Darken The Cliff Lines

With all this shading youre likely to notice that youre losing definition on the cliff edges. Thats an easy fix. Go back over the cliff edges to darken those lines. Dont just draw over the whole cliff edge, but focus on places where the shadows are darkest beside it. When the line weight, and the shadow, are pulling together, itll look great.

And there you have it a full blown canyon. The first three steps are easy and the shading part just takes a little practice.

Block In The Hard Cast Shadows From The Cliffs

This is a deep canyon so the cliffs will cast a hard shadow. The best trick here is to basically pencil in your cliff top line, but moved half a centimeter down and right. Then fill in any area that would be within the canyon outline. This is the simple, clean, cast shadow from the cliff top. You can see this in real life in this satellite view of the Grand Canyon :

    Grand Canyon Painting Lesson

Here is another lesson inspiration from the book, Wow! America! by Robert Neubecker. A journey across the United States brings us to the great Grand Canyon. Layers of rock, canyons and eroded arches appear endless, broken up only by the slight variations of colors. This lesson focuses on creating depth in a picture. The concept here, near and far can be used or simply the foreground, mid-ground and the background. The results are quite graphic and dramaticjust like the Grand Canyon!

Supplies: 12 x 18 white paper Pencil and eraser Tempera Paints: Mix up some desert-like colors in blues, browns, terra-cotta, yellows, etc. Black tempera paint and small tipped paint brush. Photographs of the Grand Canyon Neubeckers book, Wow! America!

Drawing the Canyon:Starting at the bottom of the page, draw a line that will represent the edge of a cliff. The line should be about a hands-width from the bottom of the page and should contain curved sections and sections that bend into one another.

Draw vertical lines where the lines bend in together. This creates the illusion of depth.

Next, draw the pancake like plateaus. It helps to keep the top part of the pancake relatively flat and then round the bottom. Draw as many pancakes as you would like.

Add the vertical lines that will turn the flying pancakes into plateaus. Encourage lines that bend slightly.

Draw a straight horizon line near the top of the drawing. Add rock formations, clouds, the sun, etc.

    North Rim 4 Panel Mural

Dear Reader, This will be an extensive project that includes a preliminary painting for the sole purpose of practicing and studying the values, colors and problems in this panorama. The Grand Canyon is very difficult to paint as its geology and geometry defy logical surface modeling.

Here is the goal. This is a slightly posterized version of a photo I took during a recent vacation to the north rim in Septemberduring Fall colors. There are some bright yellow-gold Aspens on the canyon edge. The San Francisco Peaks, where I live, are visible in the background. Even this far away I remain personally connected.

Each panel of the final painting will be 12″ wide x 18″ high. Overall width will be over four feet. This will require a lot of color correction and value work. Here goes!

    Draw The Canyons River

In the real world, canyons are generally created by millennia of being worn down by rivers. If your world has canyons created by tectonic upheaval, magical disaster, or comet strikes youll still end up with a river. Water runs downhill, so youre going to end up with a river running through your canyon. So start by drawing the path of the river. You can add little feeder tributaries here.

Remember that any feed tributaries should all come in pointing in the direction the river is flowing.
