Where the Wild Things Are is a 1963 children’spicture book by American writer and illustrator Maurice Sendak, originally published by Harper & Row. The book has been adapted into other media several times, including an animated short in 1975 ; a 1980 opera; and a live-action 2009 feature-film adaptation. The book had sold over 19 million copies worldwide as of 2009, with 10 million of those being in the United States.

Sendak won the annual Caldecott Medal from the children’s librarians in 1964, recognizing Wild Things as the previous year’s “most distinguished American picture book for children”. It was voted the number one picture book in a 2012 survey of School Library Journal readers, not for the first time.

Stage 4: Pictures Of Objects Or People

Many adults think of pictures as a picture of something. This ability to hold an image in your mind and then represent it on the page is a thinking skill that takes some time to develop. At first, children name their unplanned creations. This means that they finish the picture and then label their masterpiece with the names of people, animals, or objects they are familiar with. This changes over time.

Soon you will see your child clearly planning prior to drawing what he will create. You will also see more detail in the pictures, more control in the way your child handles the crayon or marker, and the use of more colors. What else to be on the lookout for? Childrens first pictures often build off circles. So, you may see a sunan irregular circle, with lots of stick rays shooting outor a person .

Once your child has begun to purposefully draw images, she has mastered symbolic thinking. This important milestone in thinking skills means that your child understands that lines on paper can be a symbol of something else, like a house, a cat, or a person. At this stage, your child also begins to understand the difference between pictures and writing. So you may see him draw a picture and then scribble some words underneath to describe what he has drawn or to tell a story. When your child is able to share his story with you, he will be motivated to author more and more work as he grows.

Stage 5: Letter And Word Practice

Children have had experience with letters and print for several years now and are beginning to use letters in their own writing. Usually children start by experimenting with the letters in their own names, as these are most familiar to them. They also make pretend letters by copying familiar letter shapes, and will often assume that their created letter must be real because it looks like other letters they have seen .

During this time, children also begin to understand that some words are made of symbols that are shorter and some words are made of symbols that are longer. As a result, their scribbles change. Rather than one long string of letters or letter-like shapes, your childs writing now has short and long patterns that look like words or sentences. While these letters and words are probably not technically correct, it does not matter. This exciting milestone means that your child is beginning to understand that text and print have meaning.

Putting It All Together

Now that youve learned how to draw facial features from the eyes to the mouth, its time to put everything together into a portrait. Do not do this project before you have done the proper practice work. Go back and practice all of the facial features first.

And, before moving on to this demo, be sure to practice drawing hair. I covered this topic in another post, which you can find here.

Here are some tips for drawing portraits:

  • When you want to draw facial features, start with the eyes. This helps create a connection with the viewer and starts to capture the personality of your subject.
  • When you finish the eyes, move down and finish the nose, then the mouth. This is called the triangle of features.
  • Allow the darkness of the hair to help create the lighter edge of the face. Placing tone behind the face reduces the chance of things looking outlined.
  • When drawing hair, apply your pencil strokes going in the same direction as the hair growth.
  • Always remember the five elements of shading with everything you draw.

1. Create a Line Drawing

Use the grid method and a mechanical pencil to create a line drawing of a female face. Go one box at a time and be very careful with the shapes.

2. Apply the Darks and Start Building up the Hair

When you are sure of your accuracy, carefully remove the grid lines with a kneaded eraser. Apply the darkest tones.

3. Blend and Lift

Lesson 1: How To Sketch

to read the introduction to the course if you missed it!

Drawing is simply the process of layering shapes, lines, scribbles and values on top of each other until you get your desired result.

In this first lesson, were going to focus on the;process of sketching. If you can make a mark on a piece of paper, you can learn how to sketch! You dont need to be able to draw straight lines or perfect circles in order to be an artist.

Day 19 Of The Learn To Draw In 30 Days Challenge Texture

Texture used in the context of drawing refers to the way an object looks as it may feel if it were touched. For example, if youre drawing a tree, you want to create a bark-like texture. As a second illustration, if youre drawing a dog you want to create a fur-like texture.

There are different techniques that are used to create the illusion of texture. As an illustration, the book The Art of Drawing Animals explains that to draw short furon a dog, for example, you would do the following:

  • Create an undercoat with a series of swift, short strokes with a 2H pencil. Draw the fur in the direction of the fur growth.
  • Use an HB pencil to create a second layer. Dont cover the entire arealeave some of the page white for highlights.
  • Switch over to a 2B pencil and go over the area again.

That is, texture is created by using different pencil movements, pencils of different grades, creating highlights, and so on. Here are two videos to watch to learn how to create texture:

To practice texture, draw four squares . In each square, practice one of the following; textures: tree bark; wood, brick, and metal.

Youll be drawing a squirrel and the squirrels fur on Day 28.

Why Kung Fu Is Like Drawing

Pen Grier

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Kung Fu as:

“any of various Chinese martial arts and related disciplines that are practiced especially for self-defense, exercise, and spiritual growth.”

This is NOT the definition that I want to use here. The definition that best fits what I was taught when I learned Kung Fu is much more like the following one I found in Wikipedia:

Kung fu, gongfu, or gung fu is a Chinese term referring to any study, learning, or practice that requires patience, energy, and time to complete, often used in the West to refer to Chinese martial arts, also known as Wushu.

…In its original meaning, kung fu can refer to any skill achieved through hard work and practice, not necessarily

THIS definition of Kung Fu sounds much more like drawing. Kung Fu can roughly be translated as “hard work”. This means, any skill that requires work in order to improve it, can be labeled Kung Fu.

You can learn all the principles of drawing very easily. To get good at it though, you need to practice them.; Just like you did when you learned to write.

Drawing Noses Two Ways

How to Draw Thing 1 and Thing 2 Step by Step

The nose is the least complicated feature and most closely resembles the sphere, as noted. The five elements of shading are easy to see. It is important to learn to draw facial features in different poses.

These straight-on and profile views of the nose will give you ample practice. Follow the steps to draw a nose in both views.

Straight-on View

1. Create a Line Drawing

Use the grid method and a mechanical pencil to create a line drawing of a nose in a straight-on view.

2. Develop the Lights and Darks

First and foremost, when you are sure of your accuracy, carefully remove the grid lines with a kneaded eraser. Then, develop the patterns of light and dark with a pencil. Be sure to refer to the sphere.

Second, add reflected light along the edges of the nose and the rim of the nostril. Add a shadow edge under the tip of the nose to make it look rounded. Place cast shadows under the bottom edge of the nose.

3. Blend

After you add your light and dark tones, blend them smooth with a stump or tortillion. Very little of the drawing should be left white. Many artists will leave skin tones too light, but only the highlights should be as white as the paper.

Be sure to blend out from the dark areas into the lighter face area, just like you did in the sphere exercise. This makes it appear real.

Profile View

1. Create a Line Drawing

Use the grid method and a mechanical pencil to create a line drawing of a nose from a side view.

2. Develop the Lights and Darks

3. Blend
