How To Draw Hair For Women & Girls: CARTOONING 101 #9

Learning how to draw cute hairstyles is a great topic for teenagers learning to draw. It something they can find relatable and gives the freedom to express in their drawings instead of real life. This is especially true if they like crazy hairstyles. They can copy from images of their favourite singer or actress or create something from their imagination.

Drawing The Hair Details

To add detail to hair draw in some lines flowing from the parting line down along the shape of the hair. Add in some other lines that still follow the general direction of the hair in various places along the overall shape of the hair. Try and vary these in their length and distance from one another.

After you finish the hair the tutorial is pretty much but if you want to add some eyelashes you can follow the step below.

Sketching Realistic Short Hair

  • 1Sketch the outline of the head. Youll have an easier time drawing the hair if you can use the head as a reference point. Find a reference photo and draw the outline of the persons head. If you dont want to use a reference photo, draw an oval thats narrower at the bottom than it is as the top. Dont worry about making the outline of the head perfectyou can adjust it later.XResearch source
  • 2Draw the basic shape of the hair on the head. Outline the sides of the hair, the top of the hair, and the hairline. End the sides of the hair about halfway down the face. Leave a small gap between the hair and the head to give the hair some volume.XResearch source
  • The right way to draw the outline will depend on the hairstyle. If the hair is longer on the top than on the sides, outline the shorter hair on the sides of the head so the tops of the outlines are in line with the parts in the hair. Then, draw the outline of the longer hair on top of the head. If youre drawing short hair thats the same length all around, just draw one connected outline since there wont be any noticeable parts in the hair. If youre drawing curly short hair, draw the outlines of the curls around the top and sides of the head, but dont draw the individual curls within the hair yet.
  • Try using different grade pencils, like 8B, 6B, and 4B, to help you capture all of the different values in the hair.XResearch source

How To Draw A Female Face Step By Step

how to draw female hair realism and comics

Welcome to a new Wacom sketch lesson. Today we will learn how to draw a womans face. This – as we all know – can be a beautiful sight and is also one of my own favorites. Of course, all faces look slightly different, depending on their origin, age, number of ears, etc., not to mention the style of each artist. Sometimes even the same face looks completely different in the morning than it does in the evening.

In this step-by-step guide we will learn some basic guidelines that portrait, caricature, comic and anime artists all over the world have been using for many years when painting realistic faces. Of course, these are not mandatory rules and every artist can adapt and reinterpret them to their own style. With a task as challenging as the female face, it can be tremendously helpful to practice and keep this guide in mind.

In this course we will draw a female face from our imagination and learn some essential tricks and techniques to make it look realistic. We will start by constructing the head shape, then add the features, and finally give the face some fine-tuning and color. I hope you find the course inspiring, and that you will be able to use this approach for yourself in the future.

This course is mainly aimed at beginners, but an experienced artist may discover something new too. I’m also going to talk about the workflow on the computer with a graphic tablet and the advantages of digital devices. However, you can follow the course with pen and paper as well.

    Draw The Afro Hairs Curls

Unlike the How to draw curly hair tutorial where you learned how to draw curls like if they were made with a curling iron, in this tutorial the curls will be achieved with simply two parallel wavy lines. Draw wavy lines following the guides. Connect some of them to the hairline making the curls look soft and natural.

    How To Draw Curly Hair

But what about curly hair? Shouldn’t this type of hair be different?

Well, the results may be different, but the thought process is the same. We’ll still need to start with the overall shape of the hair. Curly hair tends to have more stray hairs that find their way outside the confines of the general shape. For this reason, we’ll concentrate on drawing the shape without all of the stray hairs. These stray hairs can be added after the general shape has been drawn, but more on this in a moment.

After the general shape has been defined, we’ll consider the light source. In this case, the light source originates from the upper right corner. This produces highlights on the upper right portion of the head. Even though we have light areas here, we’ll still see some dark values as well. This is true even if the hair is light in color.

Once we have a good understanding of the light, we can begin developing the texture and value of the hair. The directional strokes that are used should flow along the form of each collection of hairs. With curly hair, the collections are smaller and more compact. Since the hair is curly, the directional strokes that we make for each “clump” should also curve just as the hair does.

Below you’ll see the finished portrait drawing from The Colored Pencil Course along with close ups of the marks used for stray hairs.

A Few Extra Tips To Help You When Drawing Curly Hair

Now that weâre done with the main part of this tutorial, I just want to share some extra easy tips that will help you when youâre drawing curly hair.

Mix and match the 3 methods.

When youâre drawing curly hair in a portrait, itâs always a good idea to mix and match the 3 methods I showed before.

This is because not one curl of hair is the same as another.

So by combining methods of drawing, youâll be able to make a more realistic looking hair.

Another thing is that everyoneâs hair is different, so what might work for drawing one personâs curly hair, could not work for another.

    Let me share an example.

For this, Iâll take this reference image from the reference image folder I created for this tutorial.

Now, letâs duplicate the reference image and blur it on top.

To blur it, go to adjustments and choose Gaussian Blur, slide your finger on the screen to adjust and blur the reference image.

After you blur the image, lower the opacity of the layer.

When Iâm drawing hair I always do this because it allows me to focus on the big shapes instead of on the individual hairs.

Start tracing on top with all the methods you find.

For some reference images, using only one of the methods might work, I still like to change it up a bit so the illustration feels more natural.

    The more variety, the better!

Another good tip for when youâre learning to draw curly hair is to change the direction, the thickness and length of the hair strands.

    Mix it up!

HOW TO DRAW REALISTIC HAIR – Women’s Hair

This is usually my favorite hairstyle to draw and to have. When drawing this style, V shapes are created when drawing animal fur, feathers, and flower petal.

It is important to constantly create the highlighted tones of the hair, contrasting with darker shades. It will allow to create the realistic depth.

When drawing hair, bands of light are the most crucial elements to creating a realistic finish.

The average human head has around 100,000 strands of hair on it.XResearch source All of these individual strands come together to create a distinct shape, texture, and tone that make each persons hair unique. Attempting to replicate the intricacies of human hair in a drawing can be intimidating for both beginners and experienced artists. Fortunately, by breaking the process down into manageable steps and adding details one layer at a time, drawing realistic hair doesnt have to be hard.

    Finish The Hair Drawing

Gradually darken the overall drawing until you create a good balance between the various areas of the hair. Be sure to keep the strokes in the light and mid tone ares visible by leaving some distance between them.

Once done you can make some quick pencil strokes on the tips of the various hair clumps to give an appearance of individual hairs. Do this by first pressingly harder on the pencil and then quickly pulling it away from the paper. These can help give the hair a softer and more natural look.

    How To Draw Cartoon Hair

How to draw cartoon hair for guys is so much easier than attempting to draw female hair. Guys hair is always less complex when drawing portraits. How to Draw Hair: Male & Female – Ultimate Tutorial

Rabbits have soft, fluffy fur, with shorter fur on their face and nose and longer hair on their bodies. To start, create an outline of the rabbit and use dark pencil marks to create a few orientation points, like the nose and eyes.

From the nose, the fur extends in a circular pattern. Use short, fine pencil strokes to create the darkest areas of the furaround the nose and along the edge of the ear, for example. Then, use a blending stick to buff out those dark areas a bit and create the base of the rabbits fluffy texture. Then, add in more short pencil strokes to fill in the rest of the fur, working in layers to achieve highlights and shadows.

    How To Draw Wavy Hair

It can be difficult when drawing wavy hair to keep it consistent and realistic. The last thing you want is it to look like a mop on top of the head rather than lifelike. Start off in small strands to get the right balance.

    Drawing A Strand Of Hair

As is the case with any subject that you draw, practice is important. The more that we practice with a particular subject, the better we understand it. Drawing a whole head of hair will give you lots of practice. However for some, the thought of doing this may be intimidating. Instead, it may be better to tackle a portion of the hair first. In this case, a single strand of hair will do.

You may start by taking a photo of someone’s hair – perhaps your own. Try to isolate one portion of the hair. Look for a defined collection hair that forms a shape.

The four step approach that we explored above can also be used for a single lock of hair…

  • Start by defining the shape with light, loose lines.
  • Break the shape of the lock of hair down into simpler shapes.
  • Look for the dominant shapes of light, dark, and middle values.
  • Develop the texture and the value with directional strokes.

    Drawing The Female Head

To help you make sure that both sides of the head will be of equal width and that the facial features in later steps will be evenly spaced start your drawing by first making a vertical line through the middle of your drawing area. Next draw a circle for the top part of the head and from that project two lines that first go to the jaw area and then curve inwards and go down again at a sharper angle to finally form the curve of the chin.

As this is a female face for the sake of this tutorial we will make the chin fairly small and narrow.

How To Draw A Boys Hair

Usually boys hair tends to be short and making it easier to get it looking lifelike in your portraits. For the most part you will simply be learning how to draw straight hair. Although it is straight you still need to pay attention to the lines and flow otherwise it can look like lifeless and more like a cartoon image.

    How To Draw Straight Hair

    1. Sketch the outline of the hair and the overall shape. It should be done with a light HB pencil or H.Never use B pencil, as it will make the drawing look not the most professional.

    2. The next step would be to sketch out the approximate lines where it will be dark and light.

    3. Begin by shading in everything where it is dark, not with the darkest pencil, but with B or HB pencil. Especially in dark areas. That will lead to step by set, creating the gradual detailed depth and the highlights of the hair.

    4. Start blending in, lightly with the pencil stump. Then lay in the hair strokes with the darker, 2B pencil as well as the highlights with the pencil eraser.

    5. Continue gradually increasing the lightness and the darkness. It is best to learn this technique by watching some YouTube tutorials.
