Developing The Character Design

How to draw your own anime character EASY!

To further develop your design draw your character from the front, both sides , and back views. You can also draw additional views if you need to.

The reason to do these drawings is so that you will have an all around design of your character. You can then use these pictures as reference material when drawing the same character in your manga or animation.

To help you keep even proportions in different views you can draw guidelines from one body part in one view to the same body part in another view. Its important to note here that due to perspective certain parts of a character may not always be perfectly aligned to others in different views. You can see that in the above example if you look at the feet. Because we are looking down on the feet in the front view and because they are reaching more towards the viewer they extend slightly past the guideline.

Character Design Vs Normal Drawing

Designing a character for an anime or a manga is quite different than doing a one time sketch.;In a one time drawing you only have to worry about what your subject will look like from that one view for that one drawing. In a manga or an animation a character will likely have to be drawn many times from multiple views/angles.

Two very important aspects to designing anime and manga characters:

  • A character for a manga or an animation should have a reasonably simple design .
  • You need to consider how a manga or anime character will look from all views/angles .

    Section 21 Drawing Manga Eyes

There are probably hundreds of different styles you can use for eyes, but we will just go over some of the basics. For obvious reasons, male eyes differ greatly from female eyes, just as evil eyes look much different than good guy eyes. We could spend hours going over every single nuance, so for this tutorial, well keep it simple.

If youre interested this quora anwser is a reasonably comprehensive explanation of what different aspects of eyes could mean when drawing your Manga.

Lets start off with a basic female manga eye first. Start by drawing a curved line where the top of the eyelid and the eyelashes will sit. From here you will want to draw a large oval shape underneath, roughly the same width and the first line you made. Leave one side of the oval open .

Now you should have something that is starting to resemble an eye. If for whatever reason you arent happy with it thus far, just gently erase and start again. This is why you are pressing so lightly with the pencil. When the inking starts, theres no going back.

Inside this first oval, youll want to draw another smaller oval that is slightly overlapped on the top by the eyelashes. Then, draw yet another oval around pupil to represent the iris . If youre tired of drawing ovals, too bad There are more coming.

This next part is something very common among manga and anime .

    Light reflections.

For the interested, these reflections are called catchlights in both film and photography.

Section 2 Sketching Out Your Character

How to draw your own orignal manga character

Now comes the fun part. Grab yourself a fresh, clean piece of paper, your favorite pencil, and get drawing. If youre not into traditional methods, you can use a tablet or a drawing pad and do your sketch right onto your computer. Isnt the future great?

Since this tutorial focuses on the head, it seems like as good a place as any to start.

Using light pressure, start with the basic face shape . Once youre satisfied with the size, angle, and form, you can begin plotting out where you want the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth so sit.

Now, youd think eyes would be fairly intuitive to draw, seeing as how everyone has them and you see them all the time. They are actually one of the trickiest parts for artists to get down skillfully especially on manga characters since they tend to be much more expressive.

Because of this, eyes get their own little section in this tutorial.

    Incorporating Plot And Dialogue

  • 1Incorporate dialogue that matches the motivation and personalities of the characters. Once you have characters and a world, you can start turning the characters interacting with the world into a story. This involves creating dialogue. Use dialogue that matches the situation and the character. Try to make the dialogue as realistic as possible. Think about the way you talk and create conversations like that. Conversations are rarely 100;% directed. They sway and change the subject constantly. Figure out a way to add authenticity, and humor to your dialogue.
  • 2Make sure that you have a beginning, middle, and end. The beginning, middle, and end dont have to be incredibly distinctive, but keeping this organization in mind will help you plan out your plot. Take a look at other classic books and start to figure out what the beginning middle and end of those stories are.
  • For example, maybe the beginning of your anime has the protagonists little brother falling in a slime pit. The middle could be when your protagonist deciding to travel alone into the slime pit wearing an anti-slime suit to try to find his little brother. The end would be the thrilling conclusion where the slime demons living in the slime pit allow only one of the brothers to leave, and your protagonist stays behind so that his little brother can go home. Brainstorm Your Character And Build A Concept For Their Pose

You character brainstorming can take many forms, including finding references, inspiration, and getting to know about your character. The more you know the character the better you will be able to represent them visually. This is one reason that it can be much easier to get started with drawing fan art than drawing original characters. Those that you represent in fan art already have a story, posture, and style that you can draw from. If you intend to make an original character, you’ll have to make choices about all these character traits.

    • What’s your character’s posture like? Fitness level, and overall style?
    • Do they perfectly fix their hair in the morning or is it slightly messy?
    • What kind of clothes do they wear?
    • What are they normally doing? It’s a good idea to portray the character in the act of doing something that most defines them.

    Free Avatar Maker: Charatme

How To Create Characters – Create Your Own Manga Pt. 2.

Unlike the first 2 options, Charat.me is more of a hands-on anime character creator rather than an automatic AI generator. It has a relatively broad range of customisable options available where the software allows for various simple alterations.

Charat is pretty decent as an online avatar maker. The software allows the user to create an anime Waifu or avatar in exactly the way they like.

But since we cant have nice things, even if you are using the software in English mode, some options still come up in Japanese. So the lack of translations is quite annoying for sure.

On top of the language issue, the UI can be hard to use because of its counterintuitive design. But if you can look past that, Charat,me is a decent online avatar creator!

    Pros

    • Plenty of customizable options available.
    • Grants full Control Over the Character Design.

    Cons

    • Bad User Interface.
    • Menu options always come up in Japanese, even if you are on the English version of the website.

Drawing An Anime Head And Face

  • 1Draw an oval and divide it into 4 sections. This will be the basic outline of your anime characters head. The proportions dont have to be exact, but make the oval narrower at the bottom since that will be the chin. Once youve drawn the oval, draw a horizontal line through the center of it. Then, draw a vertical line through the center of it that intersects with the horizontal line. Later, you’ll use these lines as guides to draw the facial features.XResearch source
  • If you want your character to have a wider face, widen the bottom of the oval so its just slightly narrower than the top. Or, if you want your character to have a slender face, make the bottom of the oval even narrower than the top. There’s no single head shape used for all anime characters, so you can experiment until you find one you like.
  • 3Sketch the eyebrows above the horizontal line. Draw a long, downward curving line for each eyebrow. Make them slightly longer than the upper lash line you drew for the eyes. Then, thicken the ends of the brows that are at the center of the face.XResearch source
  • If youre drawing a feminine anime character, make the eyebrows fairly thin. For a masculine character, thicken the eyebrows so theyre more prominent on the face.
  • Make the nose the smallest feature on your characters face.
  • The nose will overlap with the vertical line you drew. To see it better, make it darker than the vertical line, or erase the vertical line around the nose.
  • Plan For Printing Before You Draw The Actual Manga

Before you start drawing the actual manga there are a few things you should be aware of.

If you actually plan on getting your manga professionally printed you should do some research on the standard print sizes for such material. If you are just drawing your manga for practice and will print it at home you can do whatever your home printer can handle. With that said it might still be better to try and do one in a size standardized for the industry even if its just for practice.

It is important to also be aware that the standard sizes for a manga in a country like Japan may be different to what is standard for a comic book in other countries. Be careful to actually get the size that is available for you to print in.

If you want your manga printed you should also be aware of the live area, bleed and trim.

    Find The Posture First

    Félicie Haymoz has worked with Wes Anderson on both of his animated features: Fantastic Mr Fox and Isle of Dogs. When embarking on a new character design, Haymoz likes to start by finding the individual’s posture. This element can start the ball rolling on the whole feel of the personality. “I try to capture the stance of the character. Are they hunched over, or are they sitting straight and proud?” She also notes the face is important to get right.;

The drawn lines of which your character design is composed can go some way to describing it. Thick, even, soft and round lines may suggest an approachable, cute character, whereas sharp, scratchy and uneven lines might point to an uneasy and erratic character.

Ørum recommends balancing straight and curved lines. “Straight lines and curves gives your character design a rhythm. A straight line leads the eye quickly, while a curved slows down the eye.’

It’s also worth considering the balance between stretch and compression. “Even a neutral pose can lead the eye by applying these two approaches, resulting in an effective character design,” says Ørum.

    Sketch The Character Briefly

How to Draw your Own Design Anime Character

Sketch sketches of your ideas . This can be a character image from any angle or posture you want. Draw whatever you feel can describe your character well. Complete at least one outline of the whole body and several close-ups.

If your character is very big or very small, you can sketch it next to a character with a normal ratio to grasp the character size.

Use simple details or little details for the character, don’t make the characters too complicated. You can add details later if you find the character too simple yet impressive.

When you’ve finished sketching, select the drawings you like best and combine them into your complete character.

    Section 22 Drawing Faces

Now that you have your characters head with all of the needed facial features, its probably a good time to add some ears and hair .

Ears are relatively simple unless youre showing them really up close. For this tutorial, theyll be pretty basic. Typically, ears should go from about the top of the eyes to the bottom of the nose. Its usually a good idea to look at a picture of an ear for reference during this part just so you can get a more solid idea of the shape. Obviously the earlobe will be thicker than the tip of the ear, but its entirely up to you when deciding how big they should be or what shape looks best.

Manga hair this is where you can really use your imagination. Short, long, curly, straight, spiked, bangs, tied back. The options are almost endless. Lets keep it simple, though.

Very lightly, draw a rough outline of the hair. Dont worry about parts or points or anything like that yet. Just focus on where you want the hairline to sit and how it should lay around the ears. From here you can start experimenting with length, bangs, and more of the fine details. Unlike realistic hair that is made up of millions of individual strands, manga hair is drawn in several sections or clumps. Once the shape of the hair is how you like it, you can start adding some finer lines throughout the different sections of hair to indicate the way it flows and where shadows will lie.
